Rebels —o The OutsidersIn Englishis a young adult novel written by American author Susan E. Hinton. The work was published by Viking Press in 1967, and, due to the theme of the title, it attracted censorship. The book was so frowned upon at the time that it was banned from several schools in the United States for including adolescent alcohol and drug users.

About the plot

the core story

One night, at the drive-in, various band members —including Pony, Dally, and Two-Bit— meet Cherry Valance and a friend yours named Marcia. Cherry and Ponyboy are enjoying the sunset, causing them to get very close. Later, Bod Sheldon and Randy Anderson —Cherry and Marcia's boyfriends, respectively— they close the way to the Greasers and they keep them away from the girls.

The accident

Upset, both boys decide to turn to Dally, who gives them some money and a gun so they can go to another part of Oklahoma and hide out in a deserted church, where they stay for a week.

Johnny and Ponyboy come in and rescue them.. As Pony jumps out of a window to escape the flames, she sees a board fall on his friend. So, the youngest of the Curtis goes to the hospital with Dally.

The lesson

Johnny and Dally meet at the hospital. Johnny is the worst affected, with multiple injuries. The Greasers plan to attack the Socs, and Dally sneaks out to join the fight.. Ponyboy isn't too convinced, but he attends with the band anyway. In the end, the Greasers win. So Dally takes Pony to the hospital so he can see Johnny, who is near death.

Before dying, Johnny tells Pony to "stay golden." This is in reference to not wanting his friend to lose his innocence, or to become tough just like Dally. Ponyboy is devastated, and Dally runs to not face his emotions.. In the end, he calls the gang to tell them that justice is after him. Dally makes the mistake of aiming at the police who, in turn, shoot him dead.

The end
