Blind point

Blind pointBlind Spot, by its original English title- is a mystery thriller novel written by British author Paula Hawkins, known for her famous thriller The girl on the train. His most recent work, and the one that concerns this review, was published by the Planeta publishing house in 2022, with the Spanish translation by Aleix Montoto Llagostera.

Blind point It was written on request, to comply with the framework of the Quick Reads program, in charge of promoting reading throughout the United Kingdom. For this reason, Paula Hawkins's work is much shorter than her previous books, as well as having a much more conventional structure. For their part, critics and readers place this title as a domestic noir that fulfills the objective of entertaining. It is important to note that the work does not have the characteristics of a memorable crime novel, as happened with the author's first thriller.

Synopsis of Blind point

A friendship marked by tragedy

Edie, Jake and Ryan are a trio of friends that have been inseparable since high school. Jake and Ryan met first, and then Edie joined them. Their friendship seemed to be one of those rare unbreakable bonds, but none of the three counted on that, one day the worst would happen.

Upon finishing high school, Edie and Jake got married and they went to live in a big house on one of the many cliffs in Edinburgh. Everything was going well: Jake wrote scripts, and one of them managed to leave the young couple in a very good financial position. However, things changed.

The husband could not create anything that the critics found interesting, and they stopped sending him orders. The house and the couple subsisted thanks to the time that Edie dedicated to doing remote work. She was the only one who saw to it that neither of them fell apart.

inseparable until death

Shortly after Edie and Jake moved to Scotland, Ryan —his faithful companion— joined them. The reason for his surprise trip? Well was called for a position in a prestigious company. Since then, they assumed that everything would be the same as always.

However, her optimism was shattered when Ryan entered the cliff house to find Jake dead on the floor.. Instantly, the man called the ambulance and the police, but there was nothing to do.

As if that were not enough, the police thought that Ryan was responsible for the crime. And how could they not guess, if all the clues and evidence seemed to point to him? Edie didn't want to speculate that her best friend had been capable of murdering her husband, especially because of the friendship that united the two of them, more than herself. But, if true, what reasons could he have to kill him?

Alone in the house on the cliff

Since Jake's murder, the book shows only the perspective of Edie, who, for the first time, finds herself completely alone in the house of the cliff. Alone, she begins to ask herself the questions she never asked about her relationship with her husband. Likewise, she questions the friendship that he had with Ryan, in an attempt to solve the murder, or, at least, to understand it.

As the days go by, Edie's anguish grows, so he realizes thatContrary to what I thought she is not alone in her house. Someone is watching her, keeping an eye on her most vulnerable moments to attack when the protagonist commits an oversight.

Main characters

Edie

Edie is the protagonist and narrating voice of this Novelty. Since she was young, she's been used to getting exactly what she wants. However, the dynamics of her life change when she is forced to move into a house that she hates, together with a man who no longer makes her as happy as she did before.

Jake

Jake used to be a star script creation, but the last ones he wrote did not get the applause of the critics or the public. Since his decline he became a paranoid, apathetic and suspicious man. He and his wife begin to have money problems, and she is the one who bears the financial burden most of the time.

Ryan

Unlike his friends, Ryan's life can't seem to stop smiling at him. He is a prestigious financier who always has plenty of moneyIn addition, he continues to be one of the most attractive men, just like in the past, when he studied with Edie and Jake in high school.

Friendship is the central axis of the plot

Ever since Jake's murder, Blind point begins to revolve around the past of Edie, Jake and Ryen. The novel explores how balanced the relationship between the protagonists was, who gave more than the other, and if there was any jealousy problem between them. Consequently, the question of whether a woman is capable of maintaining a healthy friendly bond with a man, and vice versa, is addressed.

There are also other questions, such as how strong is the morality of a human being, and if this compass can be broken in order to protect the people you love, even though they have made a mistake, or, to be more specific, a crime. Another topic to highlight is the relationship, making it clear that love is not the only thing that counts. if there are other problems involved.
