Although the novel has evolved over time as has other literary genres such as poetry and theater, the novelistic trends of the last quarter of the XNUMXth century, which took up the classic narrative patterns.

Although today it is not easy to discern creative currents or schools in the new narrative, we can instead glimpse the main current novelistic trends in Spain. We can talk about five more relevant and then we name them and we make a brief summary about each of them.

Mystery and / or intrigue novel

The science fiction genre where intrigue and police themes are dealt with resurfaced in the late 90s in Spain. Among its national growers we can highlight Manuel Vázquez Montalbán who created the private detective Pepe Carvalho; Also to Perez-Reverte with his great novels like "The Queen of the South" published in 2002 or one of his most famous previous works, «The table of Flanders» (1990) and «The Dumas Club» (1992)

Historical novel

If we go to the 90s we have to highlight works such as "The gold of dreams" de Jose Maria Merino, "The heretic", published in 1998 by Miguel Delibes or the famous saga starring the Captain Alatriste set in the Spanish Golden Age, from the aforementioned author, Arturo Perez-Reverte.

And in recent years, the type of historical novel that has flourished are those that are contextualized in nearby times such as the Civil War. If we talk about this time we can mention such outstanding works as "The sleeping voice" (2002) of Sweet Chacon, "Soldiers of Salamis" (2001) of Javier Fences o «The name of ours» (2004) of Lawrence Silva. The latter talks about the wars in Africa in the 20s.

Intimate reflection novel

These novels are characterized above all by personal search and metaphysical reflection on their own life experience and existence.

There are many authors who have dedicated themselves body and soul to this type of genre: Juan Jose Millás with his book "The disorder of your name", in which psychological introspection is combined with literary reflection; Julio Llamazares, with his book "The yellow rain" (1988) where something that still happens today is narrated, such as the continuous abandonment of peoples.

Romantic and erotic novel

In Spain, the golden age of romanticism was lived during the XNUMXth century. Currently there are writers who mix romanticism and eroticism in novels with a more feminine and younger audience. We could mention in this trend of the novel genre to Elizabeth Benavent, which became super known thanks to its Valeria saga and that year after year he has been publishing works with the same characteristics as the first.
