Literature at Christmas

literature-at-christmas

Who does not know today the famous book "Christmas story" de Charles Dickens? Maybe you know him as "Christmas song" o "Canticle of Christmas", but it is the same. For those who have not read it yet (we strongly recommend it) tell you that it narrates the haunting night that the miserable and stingy old man Ebenezer Scrooge spends on Christmas Eve as a result of the visit of the specter of his old partner, Jacob Marley, who parades before him the vision of the spirits of Christmas past, present and future. The emotions and reflections that this journey stirs up in Scrooge will end up working a happy transformation in his existence. It is a story to enjoy and if it is at this Christmas time, much better.

But it is not the only book that deals with Christmas or takes place on these special dates. Today we bring you 5 of them, that you may not know and that are also very good books. Stay with Actualidad Literatura and discover a little more literature at Christmas.

"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry

For the most romantic:

Della and Jim are a loving couple who don't want to let Christmas go by without giving each other a gift. For this they will have to sell something that is very valuable to them and thus be able to buy the gift that their loved one wants. A story that highlights the sacrifice and emotion of feeling loved. Delicate and poetic illustrations by Lisbeth Zwerger illuminate this delicate and moving story.

"The Santa Claus Letters" by JRR Tolkien

For fans of JRR Tolkien, a little-known book by the author:

It compiles the letters that the well-known writer of "The Lord of the Rings" wrote to his children at Christmas pretending to be Santa Claus, between 1920 and 1943. In them he narrates his adventures and those of his assistants at the North Pole.

"Manhattan Christmas" by Gema Samaro

Ideal for those who have had to leave their country of origin in search of a better life abroad:

There are five days left until Christmas Eve and Susana, away from her family and friends, misses everything. What she doesn't know is that they don't plan to leave her alone these days. Thus, they will parade through Manhattan until their life turns into absolute chaos. Her ex-boyfriend will appear, determined to win her back; also his mother and grandmother, convinced that he must leave his current partner because he is more than dangerous; then his best friends, who are about to break up. His sister Sofía mysteriously disappears and to top it all, a ghost pianist lives in his house and his teacher friend needs his help to guard an extraterrestrial object ... Anyway, the perfect setting to "enjoy" a real nightmare Christmas. Or not? What if happiness surprised you when you no longer expect anything? What if after all these were the perfect Christmases, or almost, that Susana has always dreamed of?

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss's children's story in which the true nature of Christmas is conveyed: it's not the gifts, it's not having a tree loaded with packages on Christmas Day, it's sharing the moments with your family and the people you love .

"A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote

This tale-tale by the great Truman Capote could not be missed. You can find it in a book entitled "Three stories":

Three memorable forays into the territory of memory, of the past, of childhood, meet here for the first time. Three memories of family reunions sparked by holiday celebrations - two Christmases and one Thanksgiving - turned into literature of the highest quality thanks to the masterful hand of Truman Capote. And Buddy, that is, little Truman, is the protagonist of these stories. A shared role in two of them ("A Christmas Memory" and "The Thanksgiving Guest") by Miss Sook, an eccentric spinster relative to whom the boy felt very close in the years he spent with relatives from his mother in Alabama. In the third, One Christmas, Buddy travels to New Orleans to meet his father, whom he hardly knows.

There are many other books that have Christmas as the best possible environment, what has been your favorite book set in Christmas? By the way, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
