El Toro Ferdinando returns to theaters: Do you know the story?

78 years after the Bull Ferdinand He gave a lot to talk about, characters like Franco and Hitler "knew" him well, he returns to the cinema but this time with the name of "Ferdinand." Don't you know who this bull was and why did he generate so much controversy almost 8 decades ago? Stay and read the rest of the article in which we tell you its story with all kinds of details.

The history

"The bull Ferdinando" is a children's story whose main character is Ferdinando, who "lived" in sunny Spain many years ago. He wasn't like all steers, who just played head-to-head all day, against each other. Ferdinando had his favorite corner away from the pastures. He spent his days sitting under the shade of a tree and smelling the field flowersAn attitude that greatly worried his mother, a large dairy cow. Like all mothers, this one only thought that her son would be left helpless and alone with that behavior.

For this reason the mother asked Ferdinando if he would not like to play with the other steers. The answer was always the same on the part of the calf: No! Since his mother was very understanding, she let him sit under her favorite tree because she knew that there his son was happy.

Years passed and Ferdinando became a great bull, very strong and robust. The other steers also grew and while they all dreamed of being selected for the bullfights in the Plaza de Madrid, Ferdinando still preferred to smell the flowers under his favorite tree.

One afternoon five men arrived and were looking for the best bull for the next bullfight in Madrid. For this reason the bulls began to run from one place to another and give themselves heads to show that they were the best and thus they were taken away. Ferdinando knew that they would not choose him and he did not worry, he sat under his favorite tree but with such bad luck that he did it on a bumblebee that punctured poor Ferdinando. This made him stampede, destroying everything in his path and giving a perfect image of a brave bull and perfect for the bullfight in the Plaza de Madrid. Ferdinando snorted and lunged as if he were crazy and when the five men saw him, they shouted with joy. They all agreed that Ferdinando was the bull they were looking for, so they took him to the square in a car.

On the day of the bullfight, the band played and the flags waved, the paseillo began in an unusual way, entering first the gang, then the picadores, then the bullfighter, more proud than anyone, who greeted the public and offered them his cap . Finally, the doors were opened for the bull to come out, which was Ferdinando, whom they had nicknamed "El Fiero". The whole gang and the bullfighter were terrified, however, Ferdinando did not notice anything other than a beautiful bouquet of flowers that someone from the public had thrown around the square. He got to the flowers, sat quietly and began to smell them reminding him of the good times he had spent since he was little in the shade at his favorite tree. When they realized that, the gang was enraged, also the picadors and the public. Everyone was very angry. The bullfighter began to make horrible faces at the poor bull Ferdinando, but he did not flinch. The bullfighter smashed his sword to pieces, kicked, pulled his hair and begged Ferdinando to attack him for which he tore his clothes and surprisingly had a poppy tattooed on his chest with nothing but Ferdinando's lip, the he smelled it as if it were another real flower.

Faced with the impossibility of that bull starting and charging into the cape, they decided to take him back to the field and from what we know, he continues to sit quietly under his favorite tree, smelling the flowers and being very happy.

Political uproar of the time

This story of this peculiar bull struck a chord with himself franc, but not the sensitive fiber but totally the opposite. As soon as the Civil War ended, Franco had this story banned. For him, it was not conceivable that a bull would not want to be fought. El Toro Ferdinando sounded like "left" and "Republic" while your friend and colleague Hitler something similar was happening to him. He vetoed it from German bookstores and even had all its copies burned, calling it "degenerate democratic propaganda."

And as we all know what happens when something is forbidden in excess, is that the propaganda towards history was even greater. It was translated into more than 60 languages and only in the United States more than four million copies.

Once Hitler "died" in Germany, the opposition, printed some 30.000 copies of "Ferdinando el Toro" and distributed them to German children for free during the peacekeeping mission. To the very Gandhi I was telling this story to spread such a beautiful message.

And as, Disney  took him to the big screen and made him win the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film 1939 the year.

The new version of this tender and simple bull will be released soon. Will you see this animated movie?
