What is 'online marketing' for writers?

As you surely know, currently everything that is sold, everything that moves through Internet, every business has its campaign marketing around. What this marketing campaign achieves is that our business, our virtual store, our blog, our products, reach more people around the world and consequently increase visits and increase our income.

Well, in the publishing world, in the world of writers, the theme of 'online marketing' it works the same way. Except for the writers already well known to all, such as Arturo Pérez Reverte, Paul Auster, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, etc. that they hardly need to advertise their books, even if they do, the others, the most mundane, those who are just starting to publish their first book, the lesser known, do need to have a good online marketing created to promote your work. Why? Because luckily, there are many writers today, sometimes publishers do not give enough or do not want to "risk" with new writers, because we are self-publishing and we need readers and an audience that knows us, etc.

Keys to good 'online marketing' for writers

Let us be realistic: you can be very good writer and have a written work of the quality of Quijote, for example, and let no one buy you. Or on the contrary, you can be a lousy writer, but since you have people skills, you have a good campaign of online marketing created and also you have moved and interested in knowing the ins and outs of how the world of the book currently works, you are selling books like churros.

The ideal would be to achieve the good of each of the two options, that is, be a fabulous writer and do a good 'online marketing' of your work. The first is achieved in addition to talent, writing a lot, every day, being constant. The second is done by following a series of tips that we put below:

  • Make yourself a professional website, where you not only talk about yourself as a person and writer but also regularly publish writings and publications of your works.
  • Within your website, leave a section for blog: this should be updated frequently and looking for a reader profile according to which they may like your books.
  • Have a mailing list: A mailing list is an email address, with the particularity that when a message is sent to that address it is received by all those who are subscribed to the list. This way, you ensure that your posts and updates from the web and blog will be delivered to your readers.
  • Have a presence in social media and work with them: Currently everything is on social networks, so your book should not be less. Works with Facebook, Twitter and advertise. Campaign on yourself as a writer and on your books.

If you find yourself unable to do it with the computer knowledge you have or you think you know very little about this world, we strongly recommend, if you want to be successful with your books, that you take a course on online marketing for writers. In the network you will find infinity of them. Do not wait more!

Paradoxical. I am a writer and the networks really distract me. It happens to me that I publish my work and from there I spend it browsing. I am also a professor at the University of Buenos Aires. I mean, what could be something beneficial for me (Facebook advertising) causes me to no longer write. Here's a tip: avoid Facebook. It takes away writing time.

I agree. If you have to study marketing to promote yourself, you no longer write. The day has 24 hours.
