From the theater of the 50s
Antonio Buero Vallejo belonged to the most prominent theater authors of the 50s. He participated in the Civil War, militant in the ranks of the republican side. When the war ended, as happened with many other authors, he was sentenced to death. Although his sentence was "forgiven", he spent 7 years of his life in prison. This stage marked the playwright's work quite a bit, who defined himself as a solitary and supportive author. This loneliness and all that he experienced led him to need to express through theater very diverse elements such as realism, existential reflection, social criticism and symbolism.
In his literary career we can differentiate 3 different stages:
- First stage: The existential drama. His most notable work from this stage was "History of a staircase" (1949). It broke with the immobility of the theater and began to show a certain interest in social issues.
- Second stage: That of the historical dramas. Two important works from this period are "Las Meninas" (1962) and "The dream of reason" (1970). The author turns to the past to avoid censorship.
