5 writers with mental disorders

5-writers-with-mental-disorders

According to a recent study, writers in particular and people dedicated to art in general (painters, musicians, sculptors, etc.), are more likely to suffer from certain mental disorders. Many of these disorders are caused by the stress and anxiety of finishing a work on time and being inspired to do so.

Throughout time, there have been many recognized writers who have suffered from these problems and others derived from alcohol and drugs. From among all of them we have selected these 5 writers with mental disorders.

Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway's mental problems were already written in his genetics. Some of your ancestors suffered depression and many of them ended up committing suicide.

The author himself of such remarkable works as "The old man and the sea", said he suffered from Bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis and had certain narcissistic traits in his personality. A diagnosis that perhaps intuited how this great writer would die. We must remember that Ernest Hemingway died on July 2, 1961, committing suicide with his own shotgun.

Virginia Woolf

To Virginia Woolf the drama would be imposed from a very young age by suffering sexual abuse. Trauma that he could not overcome and that at the age of 20 would cause him countless nervous breakdowns.

It was at the end of his last novel, "Between acts" in 1941, when a great problem consumed him in a deep depression. He lost his London home in World War II. The March 28th 1941, he would fill his pockets with stones to later get into the river near his house and end up drowning.

Tenessee williams

Her illness, Bipolar disorder, it was genetic. His sister spent most of her life in mental hospitals, and after a poorly performed lobotomy, she was incapacitated for life. Tennessee Williams' fear of looking like her sister, led him to use drugs and alcohol.

Also the death of his sentimental partner, increased his discomfort and depression, thus increasing the consumption of narcotics and alcohol. He was hospitalized several times for these disorders and for long periods.

Hermann Hesse

This great German author, creator of great works such as "Siddhartha", was admitted by his own parents in a mental clinic at the age of 15. Reasons: he was rebellious, and alternated episodes of great creativity, enthusiasm and exaltation with others of reluctance and despondency.

After this, he also had to go to a psychotherapist when, in the middle of World War I, he found himself in the middle of political disputes, a schizophrenic woman and a sick son. Even so, he managed to overcome it and pass that crisis.

Jack Kerouac

The end of this author was written by him: "Soy catholic and I can not commit suicide, but I have the intention ofdrink me self till die«.

Thus it ended, at the age of 47 years, by internal bleeding, caused by cirrhosis of the liver, the result of a lifetime consumed in alcohol. He died as he wanted, writing in his favorite chair and drinking a glass of whiskey and malt liquor.

Did you know the tragic endings of some of these writers? Did you know about his mental problems?

Writers are exposed to mental problems, either by inheritance or by sensitivity to the harsh reality of existence ... Sometimes they often confuse reality with fantasy, or vice versa, which has dire consequences for mental balance ...

It is interesting and at the same time a bit sad to see what these characters have suffered, who reflect their essence in the arts. I think that they should not be judged but should really help them to overcome these sufferings so that they can extend their lives and continue to manifest their virtues that the muses transmit to them.
Excellent your page by the way 😉
