When football becomes literature.

Still from the film «The damned unitef».

Talking about football in a literature space is, to say the least, peculiar. Surely, we are not very used to relating these two independent worlds. This is due to the misconception of this sport as something far removed from culture or literature.

Conception that, with the literary recommendation that I am going to present to you, I hope that I changed, thus transforming the popular conception about this sport.

Both I, with my humble opinion, and international critics take the book "Damned United”By David Peace as the best sports novel. In any case, this tuning will depend on the taste of each one, even so, I am sure that this novel will not disappoint anyone.

The plot of this book revolves around the controversial and great British trainer Brian Clought. This magnificent character revolutionized English football by turning low-status teams into champions in the 60s and 70s. El Derby County first and the notthinham forestThen they became champions with him on the bench.

Anyway, in "Damned United”Tells the story of when Brian Clought signed for him Leed United, most important team of the British Isles during that time, covering the loss in the position of his eternal rival Don Revie. A fleeting adventure that ended with Clought's sudden departure from the Yorkshire club.

This true story is represented by Davids Peace with a unique style, perfectly reflecting Clought's delusional and special character and his obsession with achieving his sporting dream. With a fascinating work of documentation, the writer opens a door of time to see what was experienced inside the changing room of the Leeds United in that year 1974.

Finally, I would like to emphasize that there is a film adaptation of the book with the same title. Film directed by Tom Hooper, produced by BBC Movies  and starring Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney and Jim Broadbent.

A great adaptation titled "The damned United”That captures the ins and outs of this football novel very well and allows the reader to increase, even more if possible, his fascination with the figure of the great Brian Clought.
