For starters, we have Daniel. He is 13 years old and his mother is orphaned. He lives with his father in Barcelona who is a bookseller and manages the library commonly called The Cemetery of Forgotten Books. In it you can find many kinds of books. Thus, The Shadow of the Wind, written by Julián Carax, comes into his hands.
As soon as he starts it, he realizes that the story is so addictive that he reads it completely that same night and likes the author so much that he wants to know more about him.
One of his father's clients discovers the book Daniel has and offers him money in exchange. However, he does not want to get rid of it. It is then that the client, Mr. Barceló, tells him that the book is not for him, but for a blind niece who has read other books by Julián Carax and that she could know more about this author. So he decides to go visit her so she can tell him more about her. Of course he, when he meets her, he falls madly in love with her, but he doesn't tell her.
From those conversations he discovers something about the life of Julián Carax, such as the fact that he is the son of Antoni Fortuny, a hatter; and Sophie Carax, French pianist. He finds out where he lived so he goes to the building and his concierge tells him that his father hated him because she thought she wasn't his legitimate son because the woman was pregnant when she married him. This led him to have to endure many beatings.
After a jump in time, in which Daniel becomes 16 years old, we find ourselves on his birthday, waiting for Clara. However, she is she does not appear. In her place, Bernarda, the girl's babysitter, arrives, who congratulates him but doesn't tell him anything about her friend. So she goes out into the street and meets a "spectre" who demands Carax's book to burn it. This is not something new for him, since in the investigations he has done he knows that Carax's books are the most sought after because there are people who want to burn them, but he does not understand the reason for it.
However, he no longer has the book, because he ended up giving it to Clara. So, concerned for his safety, he goes to her house. Her idea is to take it and say goodbye to her forever. What he did not expect is that he would find her love maintaining a relationship with his music teacher, Neri. He throws him out of the house and he abandons his first love at that moment.
Daniel does fall in love again, in this case with the sister of his friend Tomás, Bea. At the same time, they take in Fermín, a homeless man who becomes his father's assistant in the bookstore. Fermín claims to be a secret agent trying to hide from Fumero, a policeman who wants to catch him. However, this does not go further. Although you can see in the book how the raids begin and even the watchmaker appears on the ground dressed as a woman and beaten for having done that.
The relationship with Clara is non-existent, except for Bernarda, who, being so fond of Daniel, continues to visit him from time to time. That is when Fermín meets her and begins to court her.
For his part, Daniel, trying to keep Carax's book safe, takes it back to The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, but not before learning that this man had lived in Paris and worked as a pianist, as well as a writer, being published by Cabestany.

Carax had no idea of her pregnancy or death, and for 10 years he continued to write her love letters. But neither his friend Miguel nor Nuria ever told him the truth.
For his part, the father of Penélope and Jorge, on his deathbed, asks his son to kill Julián Carax. After ten years in Argentina, Jorge returns and begins to speak with Fumero. He gives him a tricked-out gun so that he can go after Carax and kill him, not knowing that when the gun goes off, the one who will die will not be Julián but him.
Accused of murder, Julián has to leave Paris and returns to Barcelona, pursued by Fumero as Jorge's murderer. Thus, he decides to go looking for Penelope and that is when he discovers her grave. He flies into a rage and causes a fire in which he decides to burn all of his works, and himself. But he doesn't make it and Nuria is the one who takes care of him in the hospital, practically burned and disfigured.
Julián pretends to be Miguel, and he pretends to be Julián, being killed by the police. Hence, only Nuria and Fumero know the true identity of these two men.
Julián lives as a ghost with the name of Miguel, and this is the one Daniel has met. Their story is very similar, or so it seems to Julián, especially since the woman he loves, Bea, also has problems getting them to accept their relationship, since neither the brother nor the father accept Daniel.
In an attempt to help him, Julián kidnaps Bea to prevent them from being separated. When Daniel arrives, so does Fumero, who has followed him to find Julián and kill him.
After a fight, Julián runs away. Fumero dies and Daniel is shot, practically killing him, but he revives.
