Federico García Lorca's secret friend

Portrait of Federico García Lorca

Federico García Lorca is one of the great representatives of Spanish poetry. The artist, five years in various arts, He is considered the most influential author of XNUMXth century Spanish literature.

As a member of the generation of 27, His way of being and literary work is irremediably influenced by the turbulent period that hit Spain in the 30s. and that ended, irremediably, in the conflict that we all already know.

Anthony Beevor in his book on the Spanish Civil War he already indicates that the country was inevitably doomed to war. The hornet's nest of confronting political ideologies in the street, regardless of the events that then happened, elucidated the most absolute disaster.

Falangists, anarchists, socialists, communists ... They all fought with such virulence that practically, as it turned out, it was impossible to control some brothers bent on killing each other in the most cruel way possible.

A world of very marked ideologies and conflicting movements that did not go unnoticed by the writers and artists of the time and that, therefore, marked their way of acting and creating during the years prior to the war.

In the case of Lorca, his leftist ideas and his homosexuality made him, perhaps even involuntarily, a reference character for those related to the republic and the ideal that emanated from it.. Something totally lawful that, unfortunately, due to the achievement of future circumstances, they dragged him to be shot shortly after the war broke out. Specifically on August 19, 1936. A fatal date, without any doubt, in the calendar of the history of Spanish literature.

In any case, Lorca, like so many other Spaniards of the time and today, He had friends who did not think like him and who, due to this, would later join the block of those who took his life. The civil war was like that, sad, cruel and unforgiving. Capable of dehumanizing anyone.

One of Lorca's most surprising friends at first sight was José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the Spanish Falange. This secret friendship was revealed by Professor Jesús Cotta in his work “Friendship and death of Federico and José Antonio ". Work that, everything is said, received the award for "Historical Biography" from the Dorado publishing house.

In this work, Cotta explains the relationship between the artist and the ideologue / politician, based on a refined and professional investigation on the lives of both characters. Friendship that, honestly, is not surprising due to the recognized fondness of José Antonio Primo de Rivera for the world of literature and Art.

What is really curious is that this friendship, carried on in secret due to the ideals of one and the other, ended in the same way, in the execution, by the opposite side, of both characters. Logically the details of the two circumstances are different due to the complexity of the historical facts. Neither is the space to be treated nor am I the right person to do it.

In any case, to conclude, I will only say that the two friends, condemned to live in a troubled Spain and necessary for partisanship, before their death were able to agree on something. They were both able to predict his death since both Lorca and Primo de Rivera, sensed that their days were inevitably coming to an end.

If you want to know more about this clandestine friendship, do not hesitate to read Jesús Cotta's book and you will appreciate that it is possible that friendship and literature can overcome, in some situations, any ideological barrier that is intended to be imposed on us.
