MAY R. AYAMONTE — INTERVIEW

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Your latest novel is titled the sacred waters. What do you tell us about it and where did the idea come from?

MAY R. AYAMONTE: the sacred waters is a crime novel with historical and political overtones set in Granada. It begins when a corpse appears in the center of the city and banners announcing that more murders with riddles will occur... It is a story that has two female protagonists who alternate the narration.

We have jimena cruz who is looking for his identity as a stolen baby, who is a journalist and will lead part of the investigation to solve the crimes that are being committed. Already fatima suarez, a doctoral historian at the university who is undergoing an assisted fertility process seeking to become a mother with her partner and who will work with Jimena on the research.

It's basically a novel spins, action, where the reader is not allowed to breathe but has an approach that really connects with historical and political issues.

This idea arose because the main theme of the story (which I couldn't tell because it would be a spoiler) came to me and I wanted to tell it.

  • AL: Can you remember any of your first readings? And the first story you wrote?

MRA: Of my first readings that also marked me a lot were White tusk, Narnia, Kika Superwitch, The Lord of the Rings…and heThe first story I wrote was called love beyond uniquenessIt was fantastic youth literature and I self-published it at the age of 12.

  • AL: A head writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

MR: Various: Lorca, Toni Morrison, Stieg Larsson, Alice Walker, Elvira Sastre…

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

MRA: That question is difficult. I think I would have liked to create a Virginia Woolf character like the lady dalloway because of its psychological complexity.

Readings and publishing landscape

  • AL: Any special habits or habits when it comes to writing or reading?

MRA: To write I always have a Time. The first thing I do at the start of the day is write, no matter what is happening around me. I don't always write, I do it when I'm working on a novel. And during my seasons of writing, every day first thing without fail. read at night, For example. But I only write first thing in the morning.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

MRA: I write in my workshop. And I read anywhere.

  • AL: Are there other genres that you like?

MR: I like it. write black and youthful. But I read everything! Historical, fantastic, contemporary, essay...

  • AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

MR: I'm reading The return of Carrie Soto. and finishing of correct a novel What I have written Juvenile prescription (for institutes).

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is in general?

MR: I think the market is saturated and that, as readers, it is impossible for us to reach all the stories with the number of books that are published. Regarding publishers, I am very sorry that many are turning into shredding machines for authors.

  • AL: How are you handling the current moment we live in? Do you find it inspiring for future stories?

MRA: For me what is truly inspiring are the issues that occur in the day to day and the reality that surrounds us. So without a doubt the current moment, like all, I find it very inspiring.
