Mari Carmen Copete — Interview

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Your latest novel is titled The mimetic city. What do you tell us about it and where did the idea come from?

Mari Carmen Copete: En The mimetic city I tell the story of a be alien which emulates the place where it is located (in this case, Valencia), which also becomes a location. Eduardo, the protagonist, must solve a series of cyclical crimes related to the City and with a particular itinerant attraction that lands at the Valencia fair twice a year.

The idea practically arose by itself, although it has nothing to do with the final version. In that germ Eduardo did not exist and the protagonists were two kids wanting to have fun in the main attraction of the fair: he Contemplates a death.

  • AL: And you have won the XNUMXnd Short Novel Award El Proceso for Myiasis. When do you publish it and what do we find in it?

MCC: Yes. I am very happy for that fact, and very proud. It recently went on sale, on April 18. It is a horror story, whose central theme is “found documents”. The plot revolves around that, about video files that lead the protagonist to discover the existence of a to be primal and from one sect occultist All that, located in the desert of Taverns, an incredible place.

  • AL: Can you remember any of your first readings? And the first story you wrote?

MCC:Mhis first readings were the collection of Nightmares, RL Stine, the saga of Interview with the Vampire and the collection of Poe stories.
I wrote the first story at school, for language class. Was a horror story with which I earned a 10 and an incredible comment from the teacher. I think I will always remember that moment, it was very special.

  • AL: A head writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

MCC: I have several. Nowadays, I really admire Santiago exempt and I'm learning a lot from writers like Gemma Files y Daria Pietrzak. If I go to the classics: Poe, Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, Victor Hugo, among others.

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

MCC: CKnow, I don't know… a lot of my favorite characters are villains and when do we want to meet someone like that? LOL! As for creating, I was amazed with the main character of The house at the end of Needdles Street, because he has a huge job behind him.

  • AL: Any special habits or habits when it comes to writing or reading?

MCC: Ccustoms, various When I writeI love doing it with a coffee and listening music. I have specific music lists for specific plot scenes. I also like to have several open dictionaries, pictures of the locations and Google Maps. At the time of read, lifelong custom: a cup of coffee sparkling.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

MCC: ABefore, my favorite moment was the evening, in a small office that I had. Now, the circumstances of life have led me to write where can i and when can i.

  • AL: Are there other genres that you like?

MCC:Me love thrillers and noir novels.

  • What are you reading now? And writing?

MCC:JJust yesterday I started Flowers for a dead girl, Sea Goizueta. And I am embarked on two projects. The first, which, if all goes well, will see the light of day next year, has a lot of Novelty. The second is country terror and it is still in a very primitive state.

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is and what decided you to try to publish?

MCC: CI believe that, currently, the publishing world is more competitive than before and that the pandemic has not helped. There are crises everywhere, and I suppose that a publishing house must choose very well who and what to bet on. The good thing is that publishers are emerging that bet on new voices. I have been very lucky to find Obscura, that they trusted my work. I have also had great luck with myiasis.

When I decided to send the manuscript of The mimetic city, I thought the story fit the theme of Obscura. I thought I had nothing to lose by trying. Y I did well.

  • AL: Is the moment of crisis that we are experiencing being difficult for you or will you be able to keep something positive for future stories?

MCC: Fit was hard at first, when it was not very well known what was happening. Later, other things were complicated but, of course, I have gained many brutal experiences and ideas that I would like to apply in a dystopia project that I started some time ago and that I have abandoned.
