Lucía Chacón — Interview

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Your new novel is seven sewing needles. What do you tell us about it and where did the idea come from?

LUCIA CHACÓN: I have always wanted to write a novel that would help me capture some family stories that he wanted them to stay forever. In addition, I was very interested in talking about topics that in the nineties had no name or were not usually talked about, such as sorority, female empowerment, mental health, bullying labor...

Due to my work as a creator of digital content, the most natural thing was to do it in a setting that was familiar to me and through which I moved comfortably. That is why the action of the novel takes place in a sewing workshopwhere my friends meet seven female leads. They are all very different women from each other and that makes readers identify with some of the experiences they share or with their own vital moments. During their sewing afternoons in Madrid in 1991, they reveal to us episodes of his life and creating bonds of deep friendship between them.

  • AL: Can you remember any of your first readings? And the first story you wrote?

CL: My mother read me stories in English from a very young age. She sent them to us from her sister from England. From those early years I remember the adventures of Noddy. When he was already reading he really enjoyed the books of The five and Puck. Between the friends we were lending them to each other. I don't remember the first story I wrote, but I do remember the first time I they published me a short story in a newspaper. It was on the occasion of the Coca-Cola Awards, in Diary 16, back in the year 1982.

  • AL: A head writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

CL: Almudena Grandes, without hesitation. To highlight a few more: Eduardo Mendoza, light gabas, Maria Dueñas, Juan Jose Millás, Rosa Montero, Máximo Huerta… Surely he left me some.

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

CL: The alien who was looking for Gurb by Barcelona. I think our humor is similar and we would have laughed a lot together. I would have liked to create claire randal of the saga Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I find him a fascinating character.

Customs and readings

  • AL: Any special habits or habits when it comes to writing or reading?

LC: I need absolute silence for both activities. It's hard for me to concentrate and that's why I try to isolate myself as much as possible, especially when writing.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

LC: I write at home in a room that I have enabled for it. From my table I have a very nice view and that is always inspiring. Any moment is good for writing, although I think the afternoons they suit me better. Of course, always accompanied by a cup of the.

  • AL: Are there other genres that you like?

LC: I prefer fiction novels.

Readings and publishing landscape

  • AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

CL: the end of the party of Nagore Suarez, a thriller which is surprising me. I am immersed in the writing my second novel, what saltwill after summer and continuation of the first but independent of each other. Life goes on at the sewing academy, the characters have evolved, and there are many new stories and characters that I hope will captivate my readers.

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is and what decided you to try to publish?

LC: I'm a just-arrived and I can't say that I still have a vision of the publishing scene to give you a firm opinion. I love learning and discovering the ins and outs of the sector and, from what little I know of it, so far I must say that the number of titles that are published each year is fascinating. That is a challenge for any writer and I like challenges. That is why when the possibility of publishing the novel arose, I did not hesitate.

  • AL: Is the moment of crisis that we are experiencing being difficult for you or will you be able to keep something positive for future stories?

LC: If the world were perfect, perhaps we wouldn't have reasons to create others. I am optimistic by nature and I always look for the good side of things. It would be sad if we were not able to find something positive in everything that happens to us. I think that is the basis of learning and we only grow by learning.
