Interview with Gervasio Posadas

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Do you remember the first book you read? And the first story you wrote?

GERVASIO POSADAS: The first book I read were The adventures of Guillermo. The first story was five or six years old, a comic about a whale and a sardine.

  • AL: What was the first book that struck you and why?

GP: I think it was They liveby Piers Paul Reed. The boys who were injured on the plane were from my school's rugby team.

  • AL: Who is your favorite writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

GP: I think the writers I enjoy the most are with Delibes and with Eduardo Mendoza. I love to see how they build a story without the need for big words. Also, of course, Gabriel García Márquez by your imagination and Borges, for his ability to be scholarly without tiring.

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

GP: Cyrano de Bergerac. I love the characters full of contrasts.

  • AL: Any mania when it comes to writing or reading?

GP: I read in any place and circumstance. In order to write needed tranquility and good music.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

GP: I really like write in hotels or hostels. They are very literary sites, full of stories. I have written in monastic inns and the hall of many hotels. It is the only exception that I make to the rule of tranquility that I impose on myself.

  • AL: What writer or book has influenced your work as an author?

GP: Besides Delibes and Mendoza, which I have already mentioned before, I really like the English humor from authors like Kingsley Amis, David Lodge or Nick Hornby.

  • AL: Other genres that you like?

GP: I especially like the literary novel and history, especially the twentieth century. I've really liked it lately The Europeans, by Orlando Figes.

  • AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

GP: I just finished Dog heart by Mikhail Bulgakov. I am very fan of Russian literature of all times, especially of Dostoievski.

As for writing, I don't start anything new until my old novel comes out. The merchant of death has now come out in September and already I'm turning a few ideas.

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is for as many authors as there are or want to publish?

GP: It's a increasingly competitive market and concentrating on a progressively smaller number of titles.

Fortunately, desktop publishing platforms they give access to many new writers and allow readers to discover new voices.

  • AL: Is the moment of crisis that we are experiencing being difficult for you or will you be able to keep something positive for future novels?

GP: I think it is a little early to evaluate the impact of this crisis. Interestingly, most of the writers I know feel somewhat blocked in this circumstance. The only positive thing I see at the moment is that is teaching us to live from day to day without making plans.
