Biography of Manuel Antonio

Plaque dedicated to the poet Manuel Antonio

The Galician poet Manuel Antonio Pérez Sánchez, known simply by the name of Manuel Antonio, was born in the Coruña town of Rianxo in 1900. His Life It was short but intense and in addition to writing he studied nautical and was a pilot in the merchant marine but contracted tuberculosis and had to leave the sea to settle again in his hometown that would soon see him die.

Manuel Antonio rejected the literary tradition but they did not fit within any line vanguard concrete since he wanted to carry out a totally personal and original work.

His early death was the reason that the poet only saw one book published, which was titled «From catro to catro. Fucks dun d´abordo newspaper ». It consists of a symbolic chronicle of a journey that can actually be read in an allegorical key, understanding said journey as that of the poet himself on the path of life that would be symbolized in the figure of the sea, renewing Galician lyrics in thematic, linguistic and formal with a slight influence of Futurism.

Finally, the poet passed away in rianxo at the age of thirty, but in 1972, the Galaxia publishing house published a volume with four books that were unknown until then and composed by the great writer Manuel Antonio.

Rianxo is a town in the province of A Coruña, therefore it is not a town in Pontevedra, a bit of rigor.
