Biography of Juan Carlos Onetti

Juan Carlos Onetti was born on July 1, 1909 in Montevideo.

His father's name was Carlos Onetti and his mother Honoria borges (of the BBorges of the Argentine writer), had an older brother and a younger sister. In his youth, he worked in various trades to survive, most unrelated to literature. He married his cousin and within a few years he divorced and married his other (younger) cousin.

But none of this appears in his work, or in other words, all of this appears in his work but in such a complex and reworked way that it is impossible to distinguish real events from dreams.

He lived a gray life between Montevideo y Buenos Aires but he founded a city called Santa Maria for which he became famous.

From his first marriage his son was born Jorge Onetti Onetti Borges. From his third marriage, with Elizabeth Maria Pekelharing, your daughter was born Isabel Maria (Litti).

In 1950 he published The short life, a masterpiece that we may never appreciate in its full meaning.

Onetti he is a writer who (as in the case of musicians who are admired almost exclusively by other musicians) is appreciated only by a minority of readers. Many reflections can be made about this, but beyond those reflections, the low popularity of Onetti it is a fact of reality.

In 1955, Onetti got married with Dorothea Muhr, who was by his side until the end.

Of his work, the following stand out: El pozo (1939), La vida breve (1950), Los adioses (1954), The shipyard (1961), The so-feared hell and other stories (1962), Juntacadáveres (1964), Let the wind (1979).

In 1975, due to the dictatorship that had been established in Uruguay, Onetti went into exile in Madrid, where he lived the last years of his life, almost without getting out of bed ...

In 1980 he received the award CervantesFrom then on he received some international recognition.

In 1993 he published his last novel When it doesn't matter anymore.

He passed away on May 30, 1994. We can only hope that unpublished material remains ...
