Traveling from Berlin to Beijing via Helsinki in three trilogies

The cold refuses to come, autumn is almost still summer and not a drop of water falls. I look enviously at more distant, cooler countries, more rainy. I even think of Beijing, but the cosmopolitan German capital is closer to me and the Finnish capital colder. I'm going to take three trips, also in time.

To remember the first three stories of that Bernie gunther of the Berlin 30s and 40s, created by Philip kerr. To summon ancient dark dragons in the Pekin current with Detective Mei Wang, Diane Wei Liang. And to accompany those three nonagenarian grandmothers put investigators in the cold Helsinki de Minna Lindgren.

Berlin Trilogy - Philip Kerr

Also called Berlin Noir, this trilogy collects the first three titles from the series starring the German detective Bernie gunther. Scottish writer Philip Kerr made his debut in 1989 with his first novel, March violets, and also began this successful saga that is already eleven books. Gunther, a ex-agent of Kripo (the much feared criminal police of the Third Reich), is now a detective specialized in searching for missing persons.

En March violets we are in the Berlin of 1936, when the city prepares for the Olympic Games. In 1990 it was published Pale criminal, in which Gunther has to return to Kipro to investigate the murders of several teenagers that occurred in 1938. And in 1991 the third part of this trilogy appeared, German Requiem. We are already in 1947, after the end of the war the German defeat. Gunther finds himself involved in a convoluted plot with the international intelligence services involved.

Beijing Trilogy - Diane Wei Liang

The three titles written by the Chinese author (resident in London) Diane Wei Liang are brought together in a single volume. Stars them Wang Mei, one of the most emblematic detectives of the Asian crime novel. This researcher knows and moves with ease through the Modern beijing and full of contrasts.

En The jade eye Mei is a very independent young woman who works in a private detective agency. A customer asks you to find an old one jade stone stolen during the Cultural Revolution. Mei will be forced to remember and investigate in that dark period of Chinese history that will lead her to a very well kept secret that does not interest to reveal.

In the second title Butterflies for the dead Mei Wang will have to investigate the disappearance of a young star named Kaili and will also track down a delicate "paper butterfly" that she has discovered in her Kaili apartment.

Finally, in The House of the Golden SpiritMei meets a lawyer by chance who entrusts her to investigate a case for a company that manufactures pills able to heal broken hearts. And at the same time a government inspector shows up at the detective agency with the order to shut it down.

Helsinki Trilogy - Minna Lindgren

Finnish writer Minna Lindgren created these three nonagenarian grannies and it obtained the approval of critics and readers. With a black touch of mystery and intrigue and also humor. Its formula is reminiscent of that of its very successful Swedish neighbor Jonas Jonasson.  Mix of social criticism, black humor and that point of three Marple ladies a la Finnish. The adventures and misadventures of Siiri, Irma and Anna-Liisa, the leading widows, have delighted many readers in these three titles.

En Three grandmothers and a dead cook we know these friends and residents in The Twilight Forest, a private apartment center for the elderly in Helsinki. But, when everything seems routine, in the residence there are mysterious murders that for three innocent grandmothers with curiosity and free time will become a challenge to solve.

In the second title, Three grandmothers and a jeweler back and forth, the three friends see the tranquility of their lives interrupted by a few endless renovation works In the residence. At once, Anna-Liisa's jewelry box disappears without a trace. When they decide to move to a shared apartment, coexistence problems will arise. They will also realize that these works are quite suspicious and perhaps they cover up criminal activities that they will of course investigate.

And finally, in Three grandmothers and a sabotage plan, At last the improvement works in The Twilight Forest are finished and the old people can return to their apartments. But now the direction is in the hands of a religious organization of doubtful legality. However, there is one issue that concerns residents the most. The technological innovations they no longer need assistants for the elderly. The three friends organize a plan to destroy the computer system that will take them to prison and anything can happen there.
