Back to school with the "Hobbit" in the backpack.

Still from the film adaptation of the book.

During these last two weeks, millions of children and young people in our country they have returned to the routine of their school life. The classes have once again been filled with souls willing to continue with their cultural, formative and ultimately vital growth.

Due to my experience as a Pedagogue and after several years living with educational life at various levels, I can affirm that one of the main issues that worries teachers and affects, in a negative way, the educational development of students, is the lack of reading habits and its consequences in the form of a deficiency, almost endemic, as far as reading comprehension is concerned.

This difficulty entails, in many cases, very low results in practically all subjects and a delay in the learning process that can cause various educational situations that are not very favorable for students.

For this reason it is more than necessary to insist, from home and from schools, in the practically vital need to acquire a reading habit from a very young age that allows children and young people to overcome their comprehension and spelling limitations.

Logically this is not an easy task and, surely, we will fail in the attempt that, in this world full of apparently more palatable stimuli, the youngest of the house find a taste for reading. Something that is accentuated as they grow, becoming, thus,  in a circle from which you cannot get out because, if you do not understand what you read, it is inevitable that boredom will invade your body and the desire to read will inevitably vanish immediately.

For this reason, it is very important to choose the book to be read correctly. As a pedagogue, I will say that the ideal is for the child himself to choose the book that best suits his tastes and motivations. In any case, it is very common that children do not know what to read since everything means the same to them: boredom and obligation.

Given this conjunctiva, it is highly advisable to guide, from our adult perspective, the choice of a suitable book in each case. On this occasion, I propose the "well-known" Hobbitby JRR Tolkien. A great choice, without a doubt, for students aged 11 and up. At this moment many of you will think that I have gone crazy and that I have surely received the title of pedagogy at a fair.

Well, so far I am in my thirteen and I am going to argue my proposal as best as possible so that no one doubts my experience in the educational field. First of all, I would like to mention the origin of the book itself. We have to understand that the South African writer wrote "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again" (Original title in English) for the enjoyment of your children and for them to entertain themselves with a story written by their father. Therefore, it should be noted that it was considered in its time as a children's book with all that it entails.

This makes the narrative, contrary to popular belief, fun and fast-paced, as well as fast and entertaining. Therefore adapted to the younger audience. Something that makes it a bit tedious despite the fact that many consider it a novel suitable only for "geeks" on the subject.

The book has a simple vocabulary and an affordable length. Something to keep in mind when attracting the attention of less experienced readers. All this combined with a fantastic and genuine story, undoubtedly revolutionary for the time, can make children hooked, thus fostering their imagination to transport them to a totally new world and without parallel for them. Not to mention the cultural enrichment related to the relevance of the book within the history of literature.

So, we are talking about  a great book to start reading or simply to continue strengthening the healthy habits that reading entails. All this, while entering the cave of one of the most fascinating genres in literature, fantasy.
