Asterix and Obelix

Asterix and Obelix

The story of Asterix and Obélix is known throughout the world. However, not many know that it was the creation of two people, or that this, despite the death of both, lives on in the legacy they have left.

If you want to know how Asterix and Obelix were born, the plot it has, the most representative characters and the books on the market (in addition to those that are going to come out shortly), don't miss out on what we have prepared for you.

How Asterix and Obélix were born

How Asterix and Obélix were born

Asterix and Obelix were the creation of two people: on the one hand, the screenwriter René Goscinny; and on the other, the cartoonist Albert Uderzo, died in 2020. The first time a cartoon of these characters appeared was on October 29, 1959 in Pilote magazine.

Asterix's own "father", in an article in the newspaper ABC in 2001, revealed what had been the birth of the characters, specifically, fruit of his school memories of the books on the History of France of that time. These books did not give much detail about the period and they were encouraged to create a story based on that little-known period.

René Goscinny passed away in 1977, while Uderzo, who kept all the work after his partner left, has recently passed away. However, far from forever losing the stories of these two Gauls, it is known that they will continue. In fact, it will be Jean-Yves Ferri who is in charge of the scripts; and the brothers Frédéric and Thierry Mébarki, those who illustrate.

Asterix and Obelix's argument

Asterix and Obelix's argument

“We are in the year 50 before Jesus Christ. All of Gaul is occupied by the Romans ... All of it? Not! A village populated by irreducible Gauls resists, still and as always, the invader. And life is not easy for the garrisons of Roman legionaries in the small camps of Babaorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Petibonum… ». This is the introduction that appears in all the Asterix and Obelix comics and that tells the very plot of their adventures.

Actually, we are located in 50 BC, in a village that does not really exist (although there are those who say that, due to the location and the brushstrokes of the authors, it can be located), which represents the last resistance to the Romans, specifically to Julio Cease. The whole village is surrounded by Roman camps that try to defeat them.

The problem is that they they have a druid capable of making a magic potion that endows them with supernatural powers, being impossible to beat them. So the goal of the Romans is to get hold of that druid so they can destroy the village. And for this, Asterix and Obélix stand up to them. Of course, on many occasions, the villagers themselves do it as well.

Asterix and Obelix characters

The Asterix and Obélix series is, without a doubt, one of the series in which you will find the most characters. Of course, they have two main characters, the ones who give the story its name, and two others who we could say share that role, although this is not always the case. Of course, there are also the secondary ones and the recurring ones or with small roles.

Let's take a look at all of them:

Asterix

It is one of the protagonists. He is a small Gallic warrior, and he is great because he is a short man but very persistent in what he does. He's smart, cunning, and very shrewd. We could say that he is the one who puts the head since he is the one who comes up with the plans and leads the group of Gauls when necessary.

Obelix

Obelix is Asterix's best friend, and he is a very tall (compared to his friend) and plump Gallic warrior. East puts his heart, since he is good-natured and trusts people, although sometimes that causes disappointment. His story draws attention because, when he was little, how gluttonous he was, he fell into the cauldron of the magic potion and the superhuman strength that this potion provides he has for life, that is why they do not let him drink more potion (and only in some cases it has succeeded).

ideafix

It is not really a "person" but a dog. Specifically, Obélix's dog. At the beginning of the series it didn't even exist, but in the book Around Gaul, Ideafix begins to follow the heroes, who are unaware of your presence until the end. And they adopt it.

Panoramix

This druid is the creator of the secret potion that empowers Asterix and Obelix. He has come out since the first book in the series and is an important character since he is the only one who knows the formula.

Gallic village characters

Apart from the above, which are the most important in the stories, there are other characters that attract attention and have an important role. Above all, they are those from the village where Asterix and Obélix live, such as:

  • Assuranceturix. The village bard, whom everyone wants to silence and when he is about to sing everyone runs away. That is why in many moments he ends up gagged so that he does not "mess up" the party.
  • Curcix. He is actually the head of the village. It is characterized because it always goes on a shield, it is carried by two warriors. Despite being the "boss", he is often just another villager, leaving the leadership to Asterix. But when he is needed, he knows how to organize people and be a good leader, and everyone has great affection for him.
  • Karabella. Abraracúrcix's wife. She is short and with a bad character.
  • Falbala. Obelix's platonic love. She is a very pretty blonde woman who is in love with Tragicomix, her boyfriend. In the TV series and movies, she usually lives in the same town as Asterix and Obélix, but in reality she does not, since she lives with her husband in Condate.

Roman characters

Roman characters

Finally, we have the Romans, who are the staunch enemies of the Gauls (and who have them besieged on all sides). However, the truth is that they are not "important" characters or that they appear very often (except for some Roman soldiers who are the ones who end up on the floor). For example, we have:

  • Julius Caesar. He is the main villain of Asterix, although there are many more that came out as the series expanded, such as Cleopatra, Brutus ...
  • Caius Bonuses. He is a centurion of the Roman camp (in Asterix the Gaul).
  • Gracolinus. Another one of the centurions.
