In recent years, not only the novel has enjoyed a unique awards and prizes scene, but also a short narrative that continues to have a magical heritage in Latin America, more specifically in the native country of our beloved Gabo: Colombia. Yes, the Gabriel García Márquez Spanish-American Short Story Award closed its polls two weeks ago and recently announced the great reception of the best-endowed contest in the Hispanic world.

The short story is a genre that, despite enjoying a timid but promising publishing life in recent years, also finds in literary competitions a golden opportunity to reward great authors. Some of the best examples in our country are the Setenil, which is held in the Murcian town of Molina de Segura, or the one convened each year by the short story publishing house Pages de Espuma. However, things are not far behind on the other side of the pond, in countries like Mexico, Argentina or Colombia where the heritage of short letters is still more latent than ever.

One of the best examples resides in the Gabriel García Márquez Hispanic-American Short Story Award, a contest that this year celebrates a fourth edition for which the deadline closed on May 7, with the results of participation being announced a few hours ago.

With a total of 91 writers from 14 different countries, the IV edition of the award aspires to become one of the most attended editions of its short but intense history, since we talk about the short story contest with the largest number of funds in the Hispanic world by rewarding the winner with up to 100 US dollars.

Among the candidate countries, Colombia has the highest number of writers with 27, followed by Argentina with 17 and Spain with 12. With regard to our country, some of the storybooks that are competing for the award are 'The return to the day' by Hipólito G. Navarro (Foam Pages), 'Hombres Felices 'by Felipe R. Navarro (Foam Pages),' Mala letra 'by Sara Mesa (Anagrama) or' Entre Malvados', by Miguel Ángel Muñoz (Foam Pages).

Luis Noriega, winner of the 2016 Gabriel García Márquez Hispanic American Short Story Award.

The contest, convened by the Ministry of Culture and the National Library of Colombia, will announce the winner that he will take over from Argentine Luis Noriega and his "Reasons to distrust their neighbors" on November 1 after two weeks in which the 5 finalists will be able to interact with each other in Colombian territory.

We will be expectant.
