The Three Musketeers. Selected film versions

The Three Musketeers It is possibly the best known novel of Alexandre Dumas or, perhaps, the most popular. And why do I bring it up? Well, because today she is his birthday, and it is now 220 since the famous French writer saw his first light in July. But since it is also more than possible that not everyone has read the most famous musketeer story that has been written and will be written, here is a review of some of the many adaptations that have been made in the cinema. And we have certainly seen those, because since their first silent versions of 100 years ago it has already rained enough. So, in honor of the Gallic author, it goes a review of the many faces that their immortals have had Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan, and the lord of Treville, the count of Rochefort o milady de winter.

The Three Musketeers - The history

We remember the story of The Three Musketeers, which is set in the XNUMXth century France. D'artagnan is a young and impetuous Gascon who travels to Paris with the intention of joining the king's musketeers Louis XIII, in front of which is the Lord of Treville. On the way he has a bad encounter with the Count of Rochefort y milady de winter, both collaborators of the intriguing Cardinal Richelieu, the king's prime minister, who is hatching a conspiracy to remove him from power. Once in the capital, d'Artagnan has the misfortune to face the bravest and most faithful of the musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis. This circumstance will unite them to uncover those court intrigues and mysteries where the queen or the king are also involved Duke of Buckingham, and where the pasts and destinies of friends and enemies intersect, like the one that unites Milady with Athos.

The Three Musketeers — film versions

The Three Musketeers (1921)—Fred Niblo

Perhaps one of the greatest hits of the Silent movie in those still hesitant early years of the seventh art. She was played by a star of the time, douglas fairbanks, with Leon Barry, George Siegmann, Eugene Palette, Boyd Irwin or Thomas Holding. And he has not stopped having his charm despite his more than 1 years.

The Three Musketeers (1939)—Allan Dwan

This was a version of a musical and adventure comedy plan, which was the main character for that. Don ameche, very popular in those years and that came from vaudeville, a genre also from the Ritz brothers (Jimmy, Harry and Al) who accompanied him as the musketeers. to take a look, is complete on YouTube.

The Three Musketeers (1948)—George Sidney

The best known and most popular without a doubt it was this version that they starred in Gene KellyLana Turner (wonderful Milady de Winter), June Allyson, Frank Morgan, Van heflin (perhaps the best Athos of all), Robert Coote, Angela Landsbury like Queen Anne and a Vincent price perfect as the perfidious Richelieu. It is also one of the longest and most dramatic. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography.

The Three Musketeers: The Queen's Diamonds (1973)—Richard Lester

We jump back to the 70s to find this version that was also very popular in that decade and which was followed up in 1989, which adapted Twenty Years Later, Dumas' second novel about the musketeers. British-made, they starred Richard chamberlain (such as the elegant and highly polished Aramis), michael york (a jovial D'Artagnan), Raquel WelchOliver Reed (another magnificent Athos, and very much in keeping with the temperament that characterized Reed), Geraldine ChaplinFaye DunawayCharlton Heston (an unlikely Richelieu) or sir Christopher Lee (a book Rochefort).
As a curious fact, both this film and that continuation of 89, which was titled The Return of the Musketeers, have some scenes that were shot in Aranjuez.

The Three Musketeers (1993)—Stephen Herek

In another jump of 20 years we arrive at this adaptation of aesthetics and totally cast of the decade, where perhaps what shone the most was the soundtrack signed by Michael Kamen and the song marked with the musketeer motto by three other musketeers of music: Sting, Rod Steward and Bryan Adams. they starred in it Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland (worthy Athos, for the predecessors he had), Chris O'Donnell (a weak D'Artagnan, who was nominated for that year's Razzies for that), Oliver Platt, Rebecca DeMornay, Tim Curry (very histrionic Cardinal Richelieu), Julie Delpy, Gabrielle Anwar and Michael wincott, which was another great Rochefort that was undoubtedly accompanied by the actor's physique.

The Three Musketeers (2011)—Paul W. S. Anderson

And finally we have this version more than free and passed laps, brand of the XNUMXst century. The cast is also reflective of its time, with Logan Lerman as a very young D'Artagnan, Luke Evans (Aramis), ray stevenson (Porthos), Matthew macfadyen (Athos), Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom (a caricatured Duke of Buckingham), Christoph Waltz (always bad for Richelieu) and Mads Mikkelsen (which also always measures up to being bad, like Rochefort).

As a curiosity

I finish this review with these curiosities.

  • A Mexican version that starred Cantinflas (Mario Moreno) in 1942. Very Sui generis, he and some fellow raiders meet Reina, a movie star who, accompanied by some friends, visits a low-life cabaret. Cantinflas flirts with her and recovers a necklace that has been stolen. In gratitude, Reina invites them to the studios where she works, but there Cantinflas has an accident and loses consciousness. Then he will dream that he is D'Artagnan and his friends the three musketeers.
  • Our musketeer grain of sand, which is quite large actually. because we have this RTVE series, 1971, who starred Sancho grace (Who else) as d'Artagnan, Victor Valverde, Joaquin Cardona, Ernest Aurora, Maite Blasco or Monica Randall as Queen Anne of France. It can be seen in Youtube.
  • And how could we leave the Muskehounds animated, which we signed with Japan. Few series have done as much as this one to bring the classics closer to the little ones, and to many older ones. Impeccable in tone, form and background, with the unrepeatable voices of Raphael of Penagos (Richelieu), Glory Chamber (Juliet) or Joseph Louis Gil (To my).
