A week ago the media echoed that the Barcelona Court reopened the Falcones case and his alleged tax fraud derived from the publication of his novel "The cathedral of the sea". Apparently, according to «El País«, The case had been archived in February but with this decision, the writer will have to face again a serious problem that has been with him for a long time and that, apparently, will continue to accompany him until the case is finally resolved.
According to El País, he and his wife are accused of defrauding 1,4 million euros to the treasury and the justice imputes them, for this, three crimes. The issue stems from the "copyright" of his novels and the creation, by Falcones and his brother, of a business structure in countries with little taxation in order, thus, to achieve non-existent tax benefits in Spain.
The associations that revolved around this structure were, therefore, those that owned the rights to Falcones's novels. thus covering up the true beneficiary, the writer himself.
This is the thesis that sustains the accusation and therefore we will have to see how the subject evolves and if Falcones, finally, manages to prove his innocence in the face of this alleged plot.
Paradoxically, this news coincides with the publication of his new novel, "The heirs of the Earth". Before it. we are, without any doubt, in bittersweet times for the writer who sees, with this case, stained the presentation of his new and long-awaited work.
This situation is still curious since we don't often see writers involved in these tortuous cases. Despite the fact that in Spain there are many who, in one way or another, try to defraud the treasury, it is not usual or it is not so frequent that a renowned author comes to the fore on this issue. News that, therefore, to the followers of the world of literature interests and surprises us.
