Penguin Random House expands its publishing group with Ediciones Salamandra

It was last day 3 when the news broke: the group Penguin Ramdon House was made with Ediciones Salamandra in an operation that aims to consolidate it as refferent of the largest publishing market in Spanish language both here and in Latin America. It is, next to Planet group, the other great giant that disputes the pie of the sector. But how has it been, who are the protagonists and how is the play? We see it.

Penguin Random House Editorial Group

This company, leader in publishing and distribution of books in Spanish language, is part of the international group Penguin Random House, which was founded in July 2013 after an agreement between the groups Bertelsmann (German) and Pearson (British).

His goal was the book publishing for all types of readers, of all ages and in any format -paper, digital or audio- in all the countries in which it was established and operated. Thus, they export and distribute in more than 45 countries in Latin America, Asia, Europe and the United States.

En 2014 acquired the stamps of Santillana General Editions and in 2017 those of Editions B. Today they have more than 1.200 employees en 40 publishing labels independent. They all post around 1.700 new titles annually and in their catalogs there are more than 38 Nobel laureates and hundreds of the most awarded and read authors worldwide.

Salamandra editions

Salamandra editions started as an independent publisher more than 10 years before its creation, in 1989, when Pedro del Carril and Sigrid Kraus they are in charge of the subsidiary of the Argentine publishing house Emecé Editores in Spain. This publisher set out to publish in Spain the best authors of the editorial fund in Argentina and, at the same time, develop a narrative line according to the tastes of the Spanish market. Then they decide to buy the whole of Emecé España, which from that moment has been called Ediciones Salamandra.

Salamandra has in its catalog more than 500 authors that are included and distributed in different collections under his seal such as Narrativa, Black, Novela, Narrativa Joven, Blue, Ñ, Català, Fun & Food, Graphic and Letras de Bolsillo.

What is intended

Penguin random house will maintain the identity and editorial vocation of each of the stamps. It will also continue to publish originals in Spanish and translations into Spanish and Catalan of works of fiction and non-fiction for children and adults in all formats: hardcover, paperback, pocket and digital, both ebooks and audiobooks. Sigrid Kraus will continue as editorial director of Ediciones Salamandra.

This purchase by Ediciones Salamandra by Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial also unites all Spanish and international authors that already publishes those edited by Salamandra. Among them, renowned names such as JK Rowling, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Andrea Camilleri, Jonathan Franzen, Jonas Jonasson, Ferdinand von Schirach, margaret atwood Philip Claudel, Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer, Amor Towles, Jennifer Egan, Zadie Smith, Nicole Krauss, Mark Haddon, John Boyne, Khaled Hosseini or the Italian Antonio Manzini.
