Pablo Nuñez - Interview

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Do you remember the first book you read? And the first story you wrote?

PABLO NUÑEZ: Yes, because I still keep it as a treasure: The black corsairby Emilio Salgari. Among those that my parents had at home, it already caught my attention from a very young age, even before I knew how to read.

The first thing I wrote was poems in Galician, and I keep doing it because I love poetry. But the first story ... It will surprise you, but the truth is that it was Caesar's daughters, my first novel, and he was almost thirty.

  • AL: What was the first book that struck you and why?

PN: Guerra y paz, Tolstoy, because it entered me in a different line of reading from the one I had up to then. I was passionate about (continues to do so) the adventure novel. With Guerra y paz I found a second literary love, the one that is set in those events and places that in turn wrote History.

In addition, by its extension, I liked to analyze for the first time the plots, the changes of stage, characters and how the author constructed the dialogues ... In short, what's inside a bookapart from the wonderful pleasure of reading it.

  • AL: Who is your favorite writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

PN: Because of my origin — I'm from Lugo — I read a lot in Galician. Rosalia, Castelao, Manuel Maria, whom I had the pleasure of meeting. Or Emilia Brown Bazan, who seems to me an extraordinary writer.

As well Verne, Salgari, Dumas, Twain... And mNearest: Tom C, Bernard Cornwell, Umberto Eco, and two Spaniards to whom a great friendship unites me: Manel Loureiro and Juan Gómez-Jurado. Meeting both of them has been one of the best gifts life has offered me.

As you can see, it is impossible for me to stick to a single writer. And I fall short.

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

PN: Two. The Lady Arwen de The Lord of the rings, because Tolkien hid many keys in her, despite "hiding" her as a secondary character. Genius stuff.

Y Jack Ryanby Clancy. Ryan has been in my hands in the novels of his creator, and on film and television screens. Now also in a series.

  • AL: Any mania when it comes to writing or reading?

PN: I like to be around some object related to what I write, a sword, a coin, maps or photographs of the settings through which the characters I create will live adventures.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

PN: For write, riding a property. I have tried it in other places and I know that there are those who get it almost anywhere. I have not been able to do it.

Leo mucho in my village, my refuge, on the banks of the river Miño, and I love to read on the beach. I had a time, coinciding with my studies and to take advantage of the time until I entered to train, in which I took a book out of my backpack and read for a while on the wall. The truth is that I miss it… You gave me an idea.

  • AL: Where does that passion for Romans and Celts in your novels come from?

PN: I'm from Lugo (and I don't deny it, as we say around here). The heart of my city has been embraced for 2.000 years by a unique Roman wall in the world and a World Heritage Site. There are countless archaeological finds found, those that will still be found and the secrets and mysteries that surround them.

But sometimes we forget that before come Roma, there was already civilizations and culture before the legions enforced their law. Galicia is a good example of this. We are surrounded by castros, of finds from that previous time, and that lived with the great Roman she-wolf.

I was always attracted to looking for information and then write about the relationship the two cultures had. There I found the seed for Caesar's daughters.

La relationship between Galicia and other areas of Western Europe such as Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales o Brittany es very interesting and we are united by many ties, our own history, culture, music ... And many many legends. From there Queens game, which is uniquely "Celtic."

Also in Lugo we celebrate, to perform tribute and unite the peoples that built our cradle and origins, a party, Burning Lucus (search the internet or social networks), which has attracted more than half a million people in some editions.

With people from all over the world, from many corners of Spain, to Ireland, France or Italy ... Almost any country in Europe with a wide representation of Portugal, but every year we are surprised by visitors from Latin America, Honduras, Mexico, Argentina, Taiwanese or even Australians. The of China, because our wall is twinned with its Great Wall and Lugo with the city of Quinhuangdao. The pandemic stopped us, but we will be back.

With everything I am telling you, and what I have left in the pipeline, surely you understand that passion better.

  • AL: Your favorite genres besides historical?

PN: The thriller. And there we have in Juan a true genius. The strange thing is that he is not American, right?

  • AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

PN: Just finished The door, by Loureiro, a novelón. I am with The witch's garden, by Clara Tahoces, and White king.

I write, But slowest taveller of what I wanted. A bad streak of family losses that I find difficult to get out of. In the next I return to recover the Romans, who have told me they miss me.

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is for as many authors as there are or want to publish?

PN: Very complicated. But not because of the number of authors, there always were, and hopefully we will be more and more because it will mean that our children read. Without it, you cannot write.

I tell you one personal experience. As I already told you, the first thing I wrote was Caesar's daughters, I sent it to Planet Award, without slogan and without pseudonym, and they put me in the end. Among more than five hundred manuscripts from all over the world. That's why I say that nothing is impossible no one stop trying to post. The talent ends up finding a door or a window, but it finds them.

The difficult thing is in the current situation. We were recovering from the previous crisis and now this madness. If it affects us all, publishers also suffer, booksellers, distributors, printers ... The entire publishing and commercial chain of the book suffers a second crisis, is even more unexpected and cruel, but sure, SURE, that we left it. Cheer up.

  • AL: Is the moment of crisis that we are experiencing being difficult for you or will you be able to keep something positive for future novels?

PN: Yes it is. My family and environment, I imagine how those of all of you, friends and colleagues have suffered not only the economic crisis, but also the health crisis, with sick people, and unfortunately, casualties.

In my case, I have to take refuge in the stories that I already had designed. Little remains of the current moment that I can really brand as positive, but yes, the most important thing for me on a literary level. That contact with readers It is the most beautiful thing that has happened to me since I published, and in this new post-covid world, your messages, your support is appreciated more than ever. Thank you, and of course count on me too.
