XXVIII Autumn Fair of the Old and Ancient Book in Madrid.

The books of my aunts and my father

The books of my aunts and my father

Like every year for 28 on these dates (September 29 - October 16) the XXVIII Autumn Fair of the Old and Old Book is taking place in Madrid. It is organized by the Asociación de Libreros de Viejo de Madrid (LIBRIS) and is sponsored by the Office of Culture and Tourism of the Community of Madrid. This year there are 39 guest bookstores that place their booths in the central Paseo de Recoletos, on the stretch from Calle Prim to Plaza Colón.

The title that has been chosen is The ideal of chefsby T. Waps. Visitors and natives of Madrid can admire and purchase books for all purses and all themes. There are pocket editions and very careful bindings. Among those themes we have from the most curious children's book to the rarest and vintage editions of authors of the Golden Age. And those books on the cover are from there? No. They have more history ...

They belong to my aunts and my father and they certainly are worthy of being in the most distinguished antiques booth, but they are no longer priceless. Their sentimental value cannot be quantified and even less so when we have enjoyed them children, cousins, nephews and grandchildren. The photo is taken in its habitat from many years ago, a small trunk, also worthless for the time of its wood. And they are kept inside it, in a closed room, with a dry and dark environment. More trunks and hundred-year-old chests surround him, so everything around him oozes that unmistakable smell of old. The one on paper is undoubtedly the most characteristic.

So they can also be considered jewels like those that are exhibited at the Fair. Like those background books, second-hand or out of print, so difficult to find. Or those special editions, or the wide and very careful selection of engravings, newspapers, magazines, comics (many preserved in plastic covers), maps ... But what has been said, for me they are no longer priced.

Oh, and at the Fair, There are no excuses not to visit Café Gijón or its tavern to soak up more of the atmosphere of historical literary relic that is breathed.

La Taberna del Gijón. Admiral street corner.

So do not hesitate to go for a walk. You will find and above all admire incomparable books. This year obviously the works of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare are outstanding.. But everyone lives with everyone.

Anyway, that bibliophiles, researchers, collectors, fans, readers of all conditions and the curious are in luck. And I end with a question: Are there relics in your libraries too? Do you keep them? Did you inherit them? Hopefully yes.
