Lorena Franco. 11 questions for the author of Ella Knows

Today I speak with Lorraine Franco, the prolific Barcelona author and actress, considered the new queen of the so-called domestic noir. Answer me to 11 questions about they favorite books, his career, his hobbies, his authors, his projects and the news that he has planned. From here I thank you for your kind participation and time spent.

  1. Do you remember the first book you read?

I don't remember exactly which was the first, although I did read a lot from the El Barco de Vapor publishing house, which was the ones I started with. And also those of Esther and her world, The Little Prince...

  1. And the first story you wrote?

At first he wrote stories. Short, fanciful stories... but as the first story, getting fully into the writing facet, it happened in 2008 with Tale of two souls, which can be found on Amazon, although I think my writing style has changed a lot since then.

  1. What was the first book that struck you and why?

The catcher in the ryeby JD Salinger. For a long time it was one of my favorite books and it struck me because of how it manages to reflect the perpetual essence of adolescence (in this case that of the 40s), with its ravings and imperfections, and a first-person narrative that makes it more real , getting fully into history and its events. The feeling of loneliness, misunderstanding, doubts, contradictions, reflections and, above all, the way it's narrated, had an impact on my way of understanding literature and also on me at that time.

  1. Who's your favorite writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

I have several Favorite writers, very different from each other in terms of narrative and subject matter, but they have managed to make me read each and every one of the titles they have released and, in the case of the current ones, they will.

JD Salinger, Thomas Mann, Vivian Gornick, Margaret Atwood, Joël Dicker, Ernest Hemingway, BA Paris, Liane Moriarty… Well, the list is quite endless.

  1. What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

Right now, placing myself in a current novel, Marcus Goldman, the writer of The truth about the Harry Quebert caseby Joël Dicker. Although as a writer I usually put myself in the shoes of women, I love the life that Marcus has in fiction; it is charismatic and real, accessible and unattainable at the same time. He seems like a great character to me.

  1. Any mania when it comes to writing or reading?

Not many, really. At the time of writing, if I do not do it outdoors, I need window front and silence. Above all silence and a good dose of caffeine. I have no hobbies to read; I read anywhere, sitting, standing, at home, in the subway, with noise, without noise ...

  1. And your preferred place and time to do it?

My favorite moment to write is by mornings and a couple of hours in the afternoon / evening, ideally at home. On mi office it's where I get to focus and find inspiration. To read, at any time, although I usually do it more in the afternoon / evening.

  1. What writer or book has influenced your work as an author?

There is none in particular, the truth. Classical and current authors have influenced me. I think that The catcher in the rye is still very present in me and, with respect to some author, references in crime novels such as Agatha Christie or Mary Clark Higgins have made me see how I like and absorb the mystery, both when reading and when I start creating a story and write. Today I am less influential, I get more carried away by my instincts after having "experimented" a lot and with various genres, and I have found my own style as an author.

  1. Your favorite genres?

The ones I write. My work at Amazon with my work in publishing is distinguished by two genres that, if I did not like them, it would be impossible to work them. I am fascinated by the theme of time travel, contemporary and romantic narrative, but that not everything centers on a love story. And, on the other hand, the psychological thriller, crime novel and mystery, which is the one I write for publishers and internationally, currently with Sphere of books. In February 2019, almost two years after She knows it (Ediciones B) a new thriller arrives.

  1. What are you reading now? And writing?

I have finished reading The gypsy bride by Carmen Mola and now I'm going to start reading Lastly, the heart, by Margaret Atwood.

I am working on various stories, working on the editing of novels already written with the theme of travel in time and another of contemporary narrative to publish on Amazon between this year and next, and, on the other hand, preparing a new thriller and with the idea of another very stuck in the head.

  1. How do you think the publishing scene is for as many authors as there are or want to publish?

Access to the publishing scene it has always been complex, there are more writers than readers. However, now an author has other outlets such as self-publishing on platforms as powerful as Amazon, and with the possibility that it reaches readers around the world and that this story does not remain locked in a drawer. In my case nI never went looking for a publisher or submitted a manuscript, I didn't have to face the dreaded "no", because I liked the topic of self-publishing And, in fact, I like it so much that I keep combining the way I publish one novel or another according to genre. Yes indeed, I encourage all writers, those great stories that a publisher cannot refuse, to try and not give up. Nothing is impossible. There are, like everything in life, hopefully. I have seen it.
