Interview with Arantza Portabales, the author of Red Beauty

Arantza Portable Holders was born in San Sebastián, But daughter of Galicians, she feels like one and lives in Galicia. He also writes in Galician and Spanish, and from his sstop literature in 2013 has been chaining successes (and awards) after starting with the genre of micro-story. The last one is Red beauty, the first title where she debuted with the noir genre, which came out last spring and which has given her the title of the "new lady" of the Spanish crime novel. Today he grants us this interview where she tells us a bit about everything: her favorite books and authors, her hobbies as a writer or how she sees the current publishing scene, among other things. Construction

Among other titles of the work of Arantza Portabales are his first book of short stories, I bought Celeste on a rake, published in 2015. Or his first novel in Galician, Surviving, which obtained the XV Novel Award for Deliveries de La Voz de Galicia. He also won the UNED Short Story Award and Micro-library Short Story Award. Actualidad Literatura: Do you remember the first book you read? And the first story you wrote?

Arantza Portabales: I am not able to remember the first book I read. I always remember reading. I have a special memory of a school reading book when I was six that spoke of a girl who came from space. I read it all the time at home.

Regarding the stories I started writing very late. With almost forty years I did a writing course and my first story for that course was called Workouts. Although I remember a story that was called Yusi what i wrote at school that I really liked.

  1. AL: What was the first book that struck you and why?

AP: A lots of. I think it is not fair to say one. It depends on each era of the life. Of the childhood, momo y The Neverending Story. And Agatha Christie, of course. In youth The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco. And already in my adult life, all the Carver's narrative (I am not able to keep any particular book).

2. TO: ¿Who's your favorite writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

AP: I'll take Carver. And also with García Márquez.

3. AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

AP: It fascinates me Florentino Ariza, that antihero of Love in the Time of Cholera.

4. AL: Any hobbies when it comes to writing or reading?

AP: I have a hard time concentrating on just one thing at the same time, so i need noise, TV on or music for both.

5. AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

AP: I love it read in the sun, either on the beach or in the garden. Where best i write is in my study, but I end up doing it where I can.

6. AL: What writer or book has influenced your work as an author?

AP: More than a writer or book, I would say that there is a genre that has influenced me a lot, and that genre is the micro-story. I started writing short story and my literary voice drinks a lot from the synthesis and brevity specific to the genre.

7. TO: Your favorite genres?

AP: I have a soft spot for him. short story, whatever the theme.

8. AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

AP: I'm reading To memory da choiva, Peter Feijoo, and writing a new case of Abad and Barroso.

9. AL: How do you think the publishing scene is for as many authors as there are or want to publish?

AP: I have been an author tremendously lucky. I've never had a problem getting published. I think that it is published too at a time when unfortunately every time fewer books are bought.
