Enrique Vaqué — Interview

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Your new novel is titled the red tarantula. What do you tell us about it and where did the idea come from?

ENRIQUE VAQUÉ: I can tell you that, like my previous two novels, it is a work that It is about the power that some men exercise over others.. In this case, two young people travel from Valencia to New York to fulfill their objectives, but there they find themselves in a force field that constantly diverts them from their path. In the end, to continue, they have to go off script with the ensuing ethical dilemma and endangering their lives.

The idea followed very diverse twists and turns. It started when I saw a reportage about the lives of three American millionaires. At that time, I often went to New York for work and this made me think about using it as a stage for their lives. Then it led to a thriller pure with love story background.

  • AL: Can you go back to that first book you read? And the first story you wrote?

EV: I seem to remember that the first adult book I read was customs articlesby Mariano Jose de lara, for the simple reason that it was the first one in my house, as part of a collection. I think it impacted me a lot. If I have always been a Frenchified it is because of the influence of Larra.

La first story that I wrote was at eleven years: my friends and I were traveling to an underground world dominated by Wolfman (no vampires came out). It was the years of influence of the British writer Enid blyton and his novels The five y The Seven Secrets.

  • AL: A head writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

EV: If I had to choose just one, I think I would choose Guy de Maupassant. His novel Bel-Ami it literally fascinated me. I remember that I was walking down the street dragging a baby carriage with one hand (double, with my two twin daughters!) and with this novel in the other.

El naturalism It is my literary reference. Modestly, I aspire to adapt it to the current times. zola, Blasco Ibanez…, they are my reference. More modern, I like John le Carré. I also admire Michael crichton as rapporteur and author of thrillers.

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

EV: I think I would stay with Vautrin, the Papa Goriot de Balzac. It also appears in other works of The human comedy. He is a notable character for his cynical and disillusioned vision of society, which definitely leaves behind literary romanticism. He seems to me a unique character, based on the commissioner vidocq, delinquent and detective at the same time.

  • AL: Any special habits or habits when it comes to writing or reading?

EV: At the time of readWriters who start to tell unnecessary details of everyday life annoy me. Or that they use phrases that are not to characterize the characters. when i find many phrases or many cacophonies in a text, I stop reading immediately.

As for hobbies for write, when I get serious I have to write something a day; every day, even if it is a single paragraph.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

EV: stop write, For the night, when interruptions are minimal To readwhere and how sea possible.

  • AL: Are there other genres that you like?

EV: Within fiction, I like the novel with a political or social background that can be framed in several possible genres. I am not obsessed with gender.

  • AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

EV: I'm reading tests current about the situation in Russia, especially the one related to the mafia. Also novels that deal with this subject, because I want to inform myself to my next thriller support, which I am already writing. It is a new novel that is, in a certain sense, an continuation de the red tarantula. I'm thinking of using the same protagonist, who will already be five years older.

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is?

EV: According to what the booksellers tell me, 2022 was a very good year for book sales. In any case, the supply of new titles must have been brutal because everyone has a book under their arm that he has written during confinement. In addition, I see that the big publishers are also betting on self-publishing, so the competition has increased a lot.

I believe that this will benefit established authors and harm those who still do not have a name. with so much novel amateur In bookstores, people will prefer a well-known author to the adventure of buying a book that may not even have gone through a publishing screening and may find it boring or banal.

  • AL: Is the moment of crisis that we are experiencing being difficult for you or will you be able to keep something positive in both the cultural and social spheres?

EV:Nor is it being especially difficult for me, that's the truth. That behind every threat there is an opportunity I have very well assumed. But it is an ethical problem for me to see so much inequality and so much precariousness around me.

Anything positive from this time? The multiple tools that exist now to promote your book.

In the field culturalI see everything very loose. We are going through a bump. I notice that I am taking refuge in the classics more and more.
