Edgar Allan Poe. 209 years after his birth. Some of his phrases

Edgar Allan Poe engraving. By Edouard Manet.

Yes today is January 19, great day of universal literature because Edgar Allan Poe turns 209. But in its eternity that is nothing. The Boston genius is still there, in his novels, stories and poems. It is so much already spoken, studied, analyzed and debated about Poe that it is really advisable to continue reading it. Enjoy the intrigue and horror as much as the love and passion that all his work exudes. Last year was my first congratulations to Poe in this blog and this second one is remembering some of his phrases.

Edgar Allan Poe

Writer, poet, critic and romantic journalistHis parents, traveling theater actors, died when he was very young. He was raised by a friend of the family, John Alan, who despite his disapproval could not prevent Poe from leaving his job to dedicate himself to writing. After moving to Boston started posting anonymously. There he became editor of the newspaper Southern Baltimore Messenger, and married in 1835 (aged 26) with his young cousin Virginia Clemm (only 13 years old) .ç

That she got sick of tuberculosis would mark the already in itself depressive character From the writer. The great concern for his wife's illness led him to alcohol and drugs. Even after her death, Poe attempted suicide with laudanum but vomited it and managed to recover.

However, alcohol and drugs no longer left him. Poe passed away in Baltimore with only 40 years. The exact cause of his death was never clarified and among other reasons, cholera, drugs, a heart attack, tuberculosis, or even a second suicide attempt, which did go well, were considered. Possibly all of them.

Some of his phrases

These were his words addressed to his Aunt Maria Clemm after losing his wife to tuberculosis.

We can only die together. Now there is no use reasoning with me; I can't take it anymore, I have to die. Since i posted Eureka, I have no desire to stay alive. I can't finish anything else. For your love life was sweet, but we have to die together. (…) Since I have been here I have been in prison once for drunkenness, but that time I was not drunk. It was for Virginia.
