Chat Stories: Literature for millennials.

Chat Stories: Literature for millennials.

Chat Stories are a trend among millennials. Aimed at an audience between 15 and 25 who reads in Spanish, Leemur had 30.000 downloads in the first weeks from its launch on Google Play.

This new form of literature is breaking the myths about young people's lack of interest in reading.

What is it about Chat Stories that attracts new readers?

  • They are short stories that read in less than fifteen minutes.
  • They read on the mobile.
  • They imitate the format of WhatsApp conversations: Short phrases, modern language, emoticons ... all linguistic formulas close to young people.

These three things make the perfect stories to read on public transportation rides, on a break between classes, or while waiting.

Chat Stories mimic a real conversation, a succession of whatsapps that give rise to all kinds of genres: Romantic, horror, suspense or comedy. The most successful stories? The horror and the romantic ones.

Leemur arrived in Spain only four months ago, but the formula is well known in Anglo-Saxon countries.

Until now, it was only possible to access stories in English or automatically translated, which took away the hook due to translation errors in word games and in context. This new app comes to meet the demand for Chat Stories written in Spanish: the main novelty is that Leemur's stories are created in native Castilian Spanish, by Spanish and Latin American writers who explore this new genre. At the moment Leemur only available on Android, But coming to IOS this spring so that Apple lovers can enjoy it too.

How does the immediate future of Chat Stories look?

It seems they will include audio, as in messaging applications, to give even more sense of realism. There will also come the possibility that the reader interacts and this can take part of history through voting, by way of nominations in television talent shows. Finally, there will be room in this format the longer stories that can be delivered by chapters as if it were a television series.

At the moment, the stories are aimed at the younger audience, but will they also engage readers who are not so but we also have downtime with no company other than that of our mobile phone? This new form of literature creates in the reader the sensation of accessing an alien conversation, of having "slipped" into the intimacy of another. Human curiosity and the attraction for the forbidden is common to all ages. The format promises to go far.
