Bosch. The excellent adaptation of the novels of Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly. Twitter profile.

Bosch is the title of the television series that covers the novels written by the North American Michael connelly. The stars of the detective from the Los Angeles Police Department Harry bosch and they are already 23, the last Night fire. On adaptation to the small screen, from 6 seasons y 10 chapters each, it's the best that can be seen right now, whether you are a reader or a spectator. This is my review because it has been my series of the year.

Bosch - The novels

Michael connelly He belongs to the group of greats of the contemporary North American Negro genre. Journalist and editor of events For a few years, he worked for the Los Angeles Times and created Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch in 1992 in The black echo (which won the Edgar Award). Since then Harry is one of the most recognized, followed and admired characters.

I have not read those 23 novels, but I have read some and between My favorites are City of Bones y Nine dragons.

  • Who is Harry Bosch?

In the books Harry bosch is a Veteran of the war of Vietnam , son of a prostitute who was murdered as a child and whose the case No. has been resolved. He grew up in an orphanage and lives marked by that fact, his experience in the war and his work as a homicide detective first and after the open cases unit of the LAPD, In the Hollywood police station.

Bosch is that cop serious, maybe rough sometimes but honored completely, and with his particular way of facing and solving his cases. Very meticulous in your work, is overturned in each caseLittle by little, he is pulling the strings he finds, and with determination and without letting go when he has discovered that they are the correct ones. It is one of those who is better to have as a friend than as an enemy. And even if he seems not to lift a finger when someone wants to confront him, it is better not to turn his back on him.

Hobbyist jazzHas a daughter, Maddie, of which he shares custody with his Ex wife Eleanor. It also has a step brother from father's side, Mickey haller, which works as lawyer defender and who stars another saga of titles.

And in both the novels and the series, the Personal life Harry's and his relationships with women are fair and minimal, which does not detract from his interest in stories. If they are Your relationships with your colleagues and bosses are important, who know how he spends them (Harry leaves the LAPD on occasion and they file it more than once), but they always support him.

  • The titles that make up the saga are:
  1. The black echo.
  2. Black ice.
  3. The concrete blonde.
  4. The last coyote.
  5. Passage to paradise.
  6. The flight of the angel.

  9. Lost light.
  10. Crosses of evil.
  11. Last resource.
  12. echo park.
  13. The observatory.
  14. Nine dragons.
  15. Downhill.
  16. The black box.
  17. The burning room.
  18. In the other side.
  19. The dark side of goodbye.
  20. The two faces of the truth.

  23. Night fire.

Bosch - The Serie

It is produced by Amazon and among producers executives are both Michael connelly —Who signs several chapters as a screenwriter— as Titus welliver, which brings Bosch to life. And it does not adapt one case per season, but rather mix several frames taken from the books. For example, in the Season 1 take the material out of The concrete blonde, City of Bones y Echo Park.

Each comprises 10 episodes in which the different cases develop slowly but surely, no sharp script twists or tricks. The success is that he does it with the fair tempo, alternating between that work cop dispatch, chases and shootings, ambushes and precise resolutions and also with excitement at the end of each season.

One of the differences with novels is that they present Harry as Veteran full first Gulf War, to make it more contemporary with today. And surely for the most purists of the character, Welliver's physique It is not that of the literary Harry, as so often happens.

However, for the viewer without references, or who first approaches him through the series, he will find a perfect composition of his hieratism and solidity in the interpretation and image of Welliver. As with the rest of the cast.

Distribution

It is worth highlighting two characters, let's say without meat or bone:

  • the immense Los Angeles, the most cinematic city in the world and exclusive and obsessive setting for so many more authors James Ellroy). With its iconic town hall, hills, streets and premises, not to mention the spectacular property where Bosch lives, he looks his best and darkest face at the same time.
  • And the Hollywood police stationwhose actual dependencies they host the filming of the series and provide the proximity to the most truly mirrored police work.

As for the cast itself, there is the magnificent work Titus welliver, an actor struggled in many movies and series (Lost, Sons of Anarchy, Deadwood…). He already deserved that starring role of recognition and brilliance for his long history as a luxury secondary school.

They cover him, with the same seriousness and good work, Jamie hector, as your partner detective jerry edgar; Madison lintz as Maddie bosch: Sarah clarke as Eleanor Wish.

Special mention is made of that couple who are counterpoint and almost the soul of the Department: the detectives Johnson and Moore or Barrel y Crate, as they are known (Troy Evans and Gregory Scott Cummins), who are about to retire but still give a lot of play.

And the bosses: the lieutenant Grace Billets (Amy aquino), who is always with his subordinates to the hard and the mature; Y Chief Irvin Irving (Lance Reddick), which also has its own particular methods of keeping order.

Why see it

Because if you are an amateur to the genre and watch police series from the cradle, Bosch It is in the best tradition of the most classic. With a touch of Sad song of hill street for the most nostalgic, their conception y bill both visual and solvency of the actors, the scripts y dialogues incisive and precise (much more forceful in the original version) are excellent .

For the most profane, perhaps they can get lost a bit to follow the intersecting plots, but even so, it is simply enjoyed by the distilling quality.
