Blacksad. Everything falls, by Juanjo Guarnido and Juan Díaz Canales. Review

Blacksad 6. Everything Falls - Part One is the new story they present Juanjo Guarnido placeholder image (drawing) and Juan Diaz Canales (script) of this detective cat the years 50 who has already turned 20. And it is a luxury, like the previous ones. I already talked about them and him, so today I focus on the latter. This is my review.

Blacksad 6. Everything Falls - Part One - Review

At the beginning of Blacksad 6. Everything Falls - Part One we see the sardonic smile of a crocodile declaiming phrases of The Tempest, by William Shakespeare. That is the first genius, like the rest of the vignettes until the end. To top it all, the story begins with these words directed by John Blacksad, in his 1st person narration from the beginning of the series with A place in the shadows.

That life is nothing more than a show is something that we all intuit. And I, without any vocation, have become a professional drama. Audience and actor with an open bar of low passions and human misery. Tortured and colorful guys are my co-stars. With such a panorama, I don't understand why I still like theater.

And of course, well, how do you not continue? You have to do it because you just know that you are going to read and watch another terrific story by this (piece of) detective cat. Little has been lavished in these 20 years of existence, the truth, because yesHe has only told us 6 stories, but what are they like! And the latter, in addition, is in 2 parts. The second is scheduled for 2023, something that will have to be appreciated because it will not be the 8 that it has taken.

But it is proven once again that their authors take so long because each one is a gem. Now, with this division, the story unfolds more calmly and is more elaborate. This can be seen and noticed not only in the more detailed drawings, in more vignettes that are actually cinematographic shots, but also in the script by Díaz Canales who, on the other hand, continues to embroider it.

It also happens that both he and Guarnido plus that time have been molding and perfecting their creatures on every new album. As always, there will be those who have their favorite, but they are all good, although it is advisable to know this kitten from birth.

There will also be those who call this story - or the entire series - too predictable or plagued with clichés, but it is that cliches work, especially in this genre.

Blacksad is as tough as he is romantic, a perfect tribute to Black more classic, both literary and cinematographic, from its aesthetics to the scripts, and, more specifically, to the North American. To immerse yourself in its pages is to do it in Perversity, The Eternal Sleep, Perdition, The Dark Path or Outlaws, where they cross the Philip Marlowe of Bogart or the Jeff Bailey by Mitchum on Return to the past. And a thousand and one more references to whatever title he signed hammet, Chandler o goodys Or any of those movies from the golden age of the 40s and 50s in the cinema.

What is it about and its characters

En Blacksad 6. Everything Falls - Part One we have John Blacksad in town after the previous cases that happened in Amarillo (Texas), New Orleans or Las Vegas. And that beginning with a seemingly calm theatrical performance will lead to a plot of corruption and political interests in the highest echelons involving the mayor, an important builder and the director of that theater company.

With them we have again Weekly, the tabloid reporter and the most comical element, as well as a counterpoint to the seriousness and forcefulness of Blacksad. However, this time he plays a most important and decisive role at the end which, of course, is left open with a Big surprise that, not suspected, has less effect. On the contrary. It's the best hit, the cliffhanger Anglo-Saxon, which leaves honey on the lips and all expectations and desire of that second part.

Of course we also continue to enjoy that anthropomorphic character creation so motley as shocking And expressiveness brand of the Guarnido house, which owes so much to Disney and, at the same time, takes away all the childish or innocent halo of the mouse company.

Nothing like a haughty turkey like the dark mayor Schumann of a New York never mentioned but clearly reflected both in buildings, streets and parks as well as in one hundred percent American urban essence. And nothing like a halcon with a penetrating gaze and powerful bearing to represent Solomon, that builder who plays with everything and everyone from the heights that undoubtedly dominates by nature.

And from those heights we go down to the depths of the earth where, of course, the workers are moles, rats or mice in the dark of metro. His representative, Kenneth Clark, is a bat who they want to get out of the way and that's why he hires Blacksad, recommended by Iris Allen (a graceful llama), the theater director to whom Blacksad has avoided a conflict with the Police with which this story begins.

So our cat will pretend to be a more worker to discover and stop the hitman (Logan, a fierce and soulless grizzly) that belongs to the mafia gang that controls some weasels, always with bad press and reminiscent of those of Who cheated on roger rabbit?, another good black history of the cinema, although more deranged and childish.

We will also see for the first time the drafting of What's New, where Weekly works, and we'll meet his new Director, a vehement porcupine, which has decided to bet on a more committed than sensationalist journalism.

More powerful secondaries are Olaf, a mischievous great dane, Solomon's driver and henchman, and Shelby, a mysterious seagull who does the dirtiest work for the hawk, who uses it under threat.

All are mixed in this theater cocktail, management of political and business powers and old accounts that they have pending. And everyone end up in disturbing circumstances —With that stellar appearance at the end of a very important character for Blacksad—, which augurs a second part full of emotion and intensity.

Ultimately

The best: All.

Worst: that they are only 58 pages.
