Beinecke Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts

Beinecke Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts

If a few days ago we reviewed the best libraries in Europe, today we cross the pond to meet one in particular, the Beinecke Library at Yale University.

The Beinecke Library is located, as we have discussed, at Yale University, New Haven (Connecticut). library, whose full name is Beinecke Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts (or Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library) contains several of the most fascinating, rare and hidden books.

The existence of this paradise for book lovers, we owe it to the Beinecke family, since it was a gift that they made to the university.

The Beinecke Library has become a must-see for all bibliophiles, especially if you are looking for rare (or mysterious) books. It is currently considered a research center for teachers, students or scholars in the field.

Although books cannot be checked out from the library, many of them can be accessed once the interested party has registered.

Knowing the library:

For those who have not had the pleasure of visiting it yet, we will tell you a little about this wonderful library.

It was built between 1960 and 1963, designed by Gordon Bunshalft. The facade of the building is built from Vermont marble, granite, bronze and glass.

This combination of elements manages to filter the light so that the books and manuscripts do not suffer damage. Of course there is also a strict control over the temperature and amount of humidity within the building.

Once inside the building, the first thing we see is the great central tower. A structure with glass doors, where a whopping 180.000 books are well protected.

We can find…:

The volume that houses the library, including the tower, the shelves and the basement, amounts to more than 600.000 books and manuscripts. Perhaps the most relevant is that of Gutenberg's first printed Bible. However, for the most curious, in that building you can find the only copy of the mysterious Voynich manuscript, although we will talk about this strange book on another occasion.
