Authors that go into the public domain in 2019

El January 1 is the day when the works of some writers and creators in general become public domain. In this 2019 there are many cases and there is a lot of material of all kinds (plays, novels, films and musical works). These are some names of writers and their productions that are free of copyright.

The most common copyright protection after the writer's death extends to 70 years. So in 2019 the works of authors who died in 1948.

There is usually a only disagreement against the release of the works. And it is by some publishers and heirs copyright. They fear that losing those rights favors lower quality editions appear, with typographical and other errors and misprints. And also that they can be given derivative works (sequels, prequels, versions) that damage the essence of the originals, because anyone can do whatever they want with them.

From the National Library of Spain (BNE) you can now access a selection of works by writers who died in 1938, which are available from the Hispanic Digital Library.

The list, composed of 175 authors, already includes names like:

• Juan de la Cierva and Peñafiel, lawyer and politician of the Restoration.
• The dramatist Serafin Alvarez Quintero.
• Gonzalo Jimenez de la Espada, Orientalist and translator from Japanese.
• Luis López-Ballesteros and de Torres, translator of the complete works of Freud.
• The writer, translator and journalist Maria Atocha Ossorio y Gallardo.

Others

• Works by Irishman George Bernard Shaw
• From the French writer Marcel Proust, novelist, critic, and essayist, his most famous other, In Search of Lost Time.
• Also of the Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud his work The me and the id. And Kathleen Mansfield Murry, a modernist New Zealand short story writer.
