The psychological debacle

From the moment Mrs. March begins to perceive that something is wobbling in her idealized world, a domino effect is created. Having maintained frivolous relationships throughout her life, and having a distorted image of herself and everyone around her, does not possess the necessary tools to avoid psychosis and paranoia The rest of the plot will follow.

Mrs. March is a novel about a hypocrite who lives by appearances, who gives too much importance to the opinions that people around her have about her. Consequently, when this false reflection falls apart, so does she. In addition, the woman becomes a mother for the wrong reasons, so she does not feel much affection towards the person she raised, in short, she is not a good mother.

Approaching the source of evil

The reasons why Mrs. March suddenly behaves in such erratic ways are rooted in her childhood.. This woman had a very hard early life, full of complexes, insecurities and remarkably low self-esteem.

These features can be understood very well when the pastry shop assistant makes a single comment collapses the protagonist. Of course, since it is a broken woman, what she has experienced ends up strengthening her self-destructive behaviors.

Over time, begins to mistrust every being with whom he comes into contact, while progressively losing his sanity. It is at this point that the novel becomes a horror story. Each moment is described in a creepy way. March's concepts, already fractured, gradually become darker.

Construction and evolution of Mrs. March

In an interview, Virginia Feito said: "I have gathered in her what I hate the most, in myself and in others." The author turned the protagonist of her novel into a terrible woman: selfish, envious, incapable of feeling affection or empathy for anyone other than herself.

March builds her personality through the perceptions that people have of her, as stated in advance. In fact, despite the fact that there are many mirrors in her house, the lady hates reflecting on them.

Part of the novel's overriding background is identity, or, in Mrs. March's case, the lack thereof. A color detail is that the reader does not know the first name of the main character until the last page of the book, where, in a fast-paced way, the true reasons for many of March's actions, his personality and his feelings are discovered.

About the setting

The image that reflects Novelty by Virginia Feito is based on her multiple experiences thanks to her trips to New York. This mirror, in turn, represents the privileged class of the city, those people who live under a light of intellectuality and arrogance, and who believe they are always above others. At the same time, this setting —which is not very well known on what date it is located— represents a social critique.

Absolute disappointment of a book. It is readable, yes. When the author bets everything on her character and this, in addition to not being credible, becomes tiresome and predictable, little can be done for the book.

    Forgettable.
