It was a few days ago and the news saddened me. Judith Kerr has passed away, the author of When Hitler stole the Pink Rabbit, one of those novels references of children's and young people's literature and based on your own life experience. She has been one of the British writers and illustrators most loved children's literature in the UK. But Judith Kerr was born in Berlin in 1923. With Hitler's rise to power, the Kerr they had to flee Germany in the early 30s. The Jewish condition of their father, the writer, theater critic and columnist Alfred Kerr, and their position against the regime put them in the spotlight and it was a policeman who warned them to leave.
They landed first on Switzerland, then in Paris and ended up moving to London. There, he was unable to study at Cambridge University as he would have liked, so he decided to do typing courses and it was also assisting wounded soldiers of the Second World War in the Red Cross. I take drawing classes and then got a scholarship for the School of Art. When he got married he left everything and was dedicated to home and family.
It was much later that Judith Kerr invented a story for her two children that she titled The tiger who came to drink the tea. And that was his literary debut in 1968. From there, his career took off and continued for another half century.
En 2012 they granted him the Order of the Empire (delivered by Queen Elizabeth II) in honor of her services to the children's literature and education about him Holocaust. And just a few days ago he celebrated his selection as illustrator of the year at the awards British Book Awards.
