How to get started in the work of Sir Terry Pratchett

Sir Terry Pratchett

There is no better tribute for an author than his work is read, even when the writer in question has given the two silver coins to the boatman. In some cases, reading and rereading his work is an easy task but in others like reading the work of Sir Terry Pratchett is long and complicated because his work was prolific and long.

Sir Terry Pratchett was a British author who dazzled the world and surprised with his MundoDisco Saga, a series of novels that spoke of a fantastic world and different from what is known today, where Dungeons & Dragons and Tolkien they marked the paradigm of the fantastic novel.

The Shepherd's Crown, Pratchett's posthumous work continues the Discworld saga

Unfortunately on March 12, 2015, Sir Terry Pratchett left us, after a tough fight against Alzheimer's, but before he left us he managed to finish his latest novel, The Shepherd's Crown, a posthumous work that is having its success among the many followers that Sir Terry Pratchett obtained.

If we also take into account the reading by Spaniards, things get complicated then the publication of the works was not done as they were published but in a different way from the rest, so things get even more complicated. That is why we wanted to make this article reflecting the order to carry out the reading of the works of Sir Terry Pratchett, not only to pay tribute to the writer but also to enjoy reading it.

Discworld

The Discworld saga or also known as Discworld is the most famous saga of the writer, but Sir Terry did not always publish works related to the Saga and sometimes he alternated it with other types of publications or works that were far from following the plot of Mundo disco.

Discworld

The famous saga begins with the play The Color of Magic published in 1983. This work talk about Ricewind, a useless young wizard who did not graduate from the Invisible School of Magic. The Ricewind adventure saga is followed by the following works: The fantastic light, Rechicero, Eric, Interesting times and The country of the end of the world.

Ricewind's adventures are not the only ones that make up the Discworld Saga. There is also the subsaga Las Brujas, which is composed of the following collection of novels and that ends with the posthumous work of Sir Terry Pratchett:

  • Equal Rites
  • Witchcraft
  • Travel witches
  • Lords and Ladies
  • Masquerade
  • Carpe jugulum
  • The little free men
  • A hat full of sky
  • Winter smith
  • The Shepherd's Crown

Guards! Guards?

This series of books responds to a fantasy world but its genre is very different from that of the Discworld saga. This time it's about detective novels set in the fantastic city of Ankh-Morpork.

guards-guards

Guards! Guards? It is considered the first novel in this saga and the best for the novice reader, but others believe it to be Night watch. In any case, these novels are followed

  • Men at arms
  • Feet of mud
  • I vote hard!
  • The fifth elephant
  • Night Watch (or Guards! Guards?)
  • thud!
  • snuff.

Lesser Gods

It is the funniest and most contemporary saga if possible of Sir Terry Pratchett since he tries to make a satire of the relations of his time between power and the Church as well as to make a mockery of religions. The work counts the story of God Om and his prophet Brutha. This work talks about omnism, a monotheistic religion that is fictitious but can be compared to current Christianity or Islam.

Lesser gods

The story speaks of the arrival in the physical world of the god Om where he sees and verifies that despite having a great religious network, a prophet named Brutha is the only one who truly believes in him. In this case, we strongly recommend that you opt for the most current edition of the work, since in the first translations omitted certain paragraphs of the original novel, error that has been corrected.

This work is followed Pyromides y Death and what comes after. Pyromides speech Pteppic, a young prince of the little Djelibeibi kingdom, a counterpart to the historical Ancient Egypt. This story narrates the adventures of that young prince who returns to his town as a god-king. Upon his arrival he collides with the priests of his own religion and with the construction of a singular pyramid that isolates the small kingdom in an isolated dimension separated from the rest of Discworld.

And the account of Death and what comes after you can find it here totally in Castilian. It is a short story that aims to continue the saga of Lesser Gods, in this case with Death, a divinity that appears quite often in the work of Sir Terry Pratchett.

Good omens

This work has nothing to do with Discworld, cities or worlds, but it does not stop continue the tone of sarcasm and irony that contains an attack on the apocalypse, the antichrist and the prophecies. In this case Sir Terry Pratchett had the collaboration of Neil Gaiman, The creator of Sandman, among many other works.

Nation

Nación has no relationship with Mundodisco either, but with the writer, however it was published months after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In this work, with a narrative background, Sir Terry tells us about his thoughts and in a totally thoughtful and unique tone within the work of Sir Terry Pratchett. This novel tells of Mau, the only survivor of an island after a tsunami wiped out all traces of life on the island. Something unusual but that is a great background for an interesting novel.

The Gnome Exodus Trilogy

This saga tells the story of a village of gnomes, a town on the brink of extinction, this town of gnomes in the face of such danger decides to move and undertake a journey in which they will find dangers, other races and more gnomes with which to walk together. This trilogy is focused on the youth world and for this reason it is not usually mentioned much when talking about the writer although it does not detract from it less than other sagas.

Gnome Exodus

The Johnny Maxwell trilogy

This saga or trilogy also has a young audience possibly more than the previous saga. This trilogy tells the adventures and life of Johnny Maxwell a 12 year old boy that he has to leave his town when his parents divorce. Johnny Maxwell ends up being a teenager where he lives other types of adventures, but throughout the novels we can see how Johnny Maxwell grows.

Conclusion on this journey through the work of Sir Terry Pratchett

As you can see, Sir Terry Pratchett's work is not small at all but well ordered it can be very interesting. Thus, on the one hand I have separated the titles by themes or sagas and on the other hand they have also been ordered by publication date although this has not been respected much based on the meaning and understanding for the reader, something that as many of you know is more important than publishing the books.

In any case, as I say, there is no better tribute than rereading the works of a writer and Sir Terry Pratchett has always proven himself worthy of that tribute Do not you think?

To finish and for the most curious, I leave you an infographic about the order and all the work of Sir Terry Pratchett, an infographic that we have thanks to the guys from fancave and especially Alkar who so kindly created and made this fantastic guide public.
