Andrea Izquierdo — Interview

  • ACTUALIDAD LITERATURA: Your latest novel is titled zodiac girl. What do you tell us about it and where did the idea come from?

ANDREA IZQUIERDO: The idea for the novel stems from one day, at a friend's house, when we began to find common patterns between our past loves and their zodiac sign. From there we began to investigate and the premise of this story emerged. From the original idea to the present, many things have changed, but the essence has been maintained ever since.

  • AL: Can you go back to that first book you read? And the first story you wrote?

AI: Ugh… I don't know what the first book I read was, but I do remember growing up as a reader when sagas like Idhun's memories o The Hunger Games in Spain, for example. I remember being at school and not being able to stop reading them, even at break time.

With writing, the same thing happens to me: when something comes to you as a child, I couldn't tell what moment was before or after. As a teenager I wrote fan fiction harry potterI remember spending every summer typing away on my parents' computer, imagining what would have happened if the ending had been very different. The first novel I finished was Autumn in London; until then, it was all drafts or half stories that I still keep on that old computer.

  • AL: A head writer? You can choose more than one and from all eras.

AI: I think Cornelia funke She is one of the most brilliant youth writers, and it saddens me that in Spain she has not been given all the recognition she deserves. She became very famous with her trilogy Ink heart, but I feel that since then it has largely disappeared from the shelves of our country's bookstores. I recommend everyone, both reader and writer (or both!), to read at least one of his books. Whichever.

  • AL: What character in a book would you have liked to meet and create?

AI: It sounds a bit cliché, but I would have really liked to meet and/or create Hermione Granger. Not only because of all that it would imply (Hogwarts, powers...), but because I feel that we look a lot alike, and I wouldn't have felt so alone as a child if I had had a story like that.

  • AL: Any special habits or habits when it comes to writing or reading?

AI: Many! And more and more, haha. What writer I have become very fussy. I have a computer that I only use to write, the rest (social media, Netflix, etc.) I have to do it yes or yes in the portable who has been accompanying me since I started university. If not, I don't concentrate. The only exception is when I have to travel, of course, and I find it super weird. I am also a crazy about background noises when I write. Now I have become fond of hearing brown sounds (black noise), which helps me a lot to concentrate, especially at night when I'm already tired.

How to Live Aligned with reader, a bit of the same. I choose my next read based on humor where I am or what I am writing at that moment. For example, while writing the zodiac girlI have been reading similar novels. I would not dare to put myself with a thriller, for example, while typing chick lit. I prefer to read on paper, since on the screen I do it for work.

  • AL: And your preferred place and time to do it?

AI: It's going to sound very awkward but I like it read sitting at a table, with the book well supported. The sofa, armchairs, bed and similar furniture may seem very comfortable but in the end they end up giving me back pain, if nothing else. When it comes to timing, it depends a lot on the job and how much I'm liking the book, but it's usually in the afternoons and evenings. I rarely read in the morning.

  • AL: Are there other genres that you like?

AI: Now I read a little of everything, but I love the youth Literature, young-adult, new-adult and romantic. In recent years I have become a geek of the books of non-fictionI am learning a lot thanks to them. There is no particular topic, I read everything: economics, mental health, food...

  • AL: What are you reading now? And writing?

AI: Well now you catch me reading Crush, estelle maskame, and The glucose revolution, Glucose Goddess. I am taking advantage of these hot days to to rewrite some scenes of the zodiac girl (second part) before handing it over to my editor.

  • AL: How do you think the publishing scene is and what decided you to try to publish?

AI: It's changing so much that it's hard to say anything ages well! Right now, very stressful. The paper crisis is taking its toll, forcing us to review scandals and retail prices for novels. It has always been difficult to access it, but right now I see it very busy. In my case, as a writer and reader, my dream was always to see a book of mine published. And to this day, after ten books, I still find it hard to believe that all of this is real.

  • AL: Is the moment of crisis that we are experiencing being difficult for you or will you be able to keep something positive for future stories?

AI: I like to be realistic, but I also look to the future with optimism, if possible. Although everything has become a bit more complicated, I think in recent years the publishing industry has become much more open to young people who write and who have great talent, so it is hopeful in that regard. I love when new faces appear new voices that are a breath of fresh air. And, at the same time, it excites me to see how people we saw born almost from nothing have now become great phenomena and continue to be just as hardworking and humble. They deserve it.
