4 contemporary Galician writers that should be known

I am spending a few days of vacation in the Rías Bajas of Galicia. And it is already 21 years. I like everything about this land and, of course, its literature as well. So, although there are many, today I review 4 of the contemporary Galician writers more representative and more successful. They are Manuel Rivas, Pedro Feijoó, Manel Loureiro and Francisco Narla.

Pedro Feijoo

(Vigo, 1975). Feijoó graduated in Galician Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He has practiced professionally as a musician and has an intense career as a producer and composer. His first novel, black genre and set in Vigo and the Pontevedra estuary, Children of the sea (The fillos of the sea), was a finalist for the 2011 Xerais Novel Prize and was a literary phenomenon in Galicia.

His next novel is Children of fire, where it recovers the characters from the previous one.

Manuel Loureiro

(Pontevedra, 1975)

Writer and lawyer, presenter on Galicia Television and scriptwriter. He currently collaborates in the Diario de Pontevedra and ABC. He is also a regular contributor to Cadena SER. His first novel, Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, a horror thriller, began as an Internet blog that the author wrote in his spare time. Given its success, it was published in 2007 and became a best seller.

His next novels, The dark days y The wrath of the righteouss, were a continuation of the first. But the definitive success came to him in 2013 with The last passenger, horror novel with a very haunting ghost ship as the main character.

In 2015 he published Glare, another novel with black and horror tints with a protagonist who suffers a strange traffic accident that leaves her in a coma. After a few weeks, and after a miraculous recovery, everything has changed completely and someone has started to stalk her home and family. Plus, he's left with a haunting aftermath that he can't control.

Loureiro's work has been translated into more than ten languages and published in a score of countries.

Manuel Rivas

(La Coruña, 1957). It is the name of the longest and most successful history. East writer, poet, essayist and journalist Galician also writes articles for El País. He is also a founding partner of Greenpeace in Spain and a member of the Royal Galician Academy.

Sign titles like short story compilations A million cows (1989), which won the Critics Prize for Galician Narrative. OR What do you want me, love? which includes the story The tongue of butterflies, which the director José Luis Cuerda took to the cinema. Rope also made the eponymous film of Everything is silence, a pitch black novel published in 2010.

His latest work, from 2015, is The last day of Newfoundland, a novel that tells the Spanish trajectory since the postwar period and the transition starting from a bookstore in La Coruña, threatened by closure.

Francis Narla

(Lugo, 1978)

Another name more than known. East writer and airline commander he has published novels, stories, poetry, essays and articles. As a lecturer, he has participated in different forums, such as university centers and radio and television programs.

Very versatile, his hobbies include cooking, fly fishing, bonsai and fashion. It also champions cultural projects such as legendary, destined to recover, protect and disseminate the magical tradition of Galicia.

At 2009 he published his first novel, The Wolves of the rye. In 2010 it was Case black, which was reissued in 2015. In 2012 it surprised with  Asshur, a historical title that conquered the public and critics, being one of the best-selling books. The adventures, avatars, and journeys of the orphan Assur, raised and educated among knights and Vikings, make for an excellent read for this summer.

In 2013 he published another historical one, Ronin, which established him as one of the most versatile and talented writers of this genre in our country. Where the hills howl it is his last historical work, with a huge and extraordinary wolf as the protagonist in a tale of hunt and revenge set in the time of Julius Caesar. Of course it has become another success again.
